All things considered, life was going pretty fucking well for Bill. Sure, there was a down side to things, as there always was - he missed home and Egypt, he missed the rest of his family, and he missed his magic. But there were plenty of ticks under the 'good' column as well - he had three of his brothers with him, he had some of the best mates he'd ever had on the island, and he had the affection of a brilliant woman who wasn't interested in tying him down. Plus there was teaching, music, always new people to meet...the list went on and on. Despite the bad memories that had peppered his years on the island, Bill had found life there to be good, in the main.
One of the things he enjoyed was his 'job' on the kitchen staff. He still remembered what seemed like yonks before, when Vianne had first formed the crew and had asked him to be a part of it. It was a big job, cooking for hundreds of people, way more than even his mum had ever cooked for, but he loved it, and it was satisfying knowing he was able to contribute in some small way.
He'd got his homemade skewers out and made three types of kebabs for dinner - shrimp, boar, and vegetable, laid out on three different platters. Rice and two big salads - one pasta, one green - rounded out the meal, along with banana nut and mango muffins. And as a special treat, for no special reason other than he felt like it, his monthly offering of Rice Krispies Treats had a drizzling of chocolate over the top.
Once everything was ready to go, Bill settled in with a book and his coffee and waited for the hungry islanders to arrive.
