what a birthday

The first thing I notice when I wake up is that my bed is much more comfortable than it was when I went to sleep. Then I open my eyes, and see that not only is it much larger, it's also got a sort of strange canopy over it, with some kind of image on it overhead that looks like the sky. There's a card on the pillow next to me that simply says To ( Read more... )

Kara slowed her mad racing to the Compound, the search for clothes that fit properly immediately stalled by the sight of a woman in an Easy jacket.

"Which one are you?" she asked, raising a half-salute just in case.

It's not a full salute, but I return it anyway, automatically, and then immediately go back to crossing my arms across my front. "Major Dick Winters," I say, my eyes narrowing slightly as I try to figure out who I'm talking to since they seem to recognize the jacket.

"Captain Kara Thrace," repeated Kara just as formally, and with a proper salute this time. "It's..." She put her hands on her hips, startled as ever to find them so narrow. "Weird to be taller than you, sir."

"It's just as weird to be shorter, Captain," I reply, and find myself noticing to my slight horror how handsome Kara is as a man. I suppose with this female body I've got all the female traits to go with it, hormones and all.

"Put your shoulders back," advised Kara, who'd never been particularly tall, even for a woman. "Makes you seem bigger. And if anyone looks at you funny." She shrugged. "Punch'em."

I follow Kara's advice, which helps some. "I think punching is more your style, Kara," I say, my horror giving way to amusement, and I smile, though I can't help but find it very weird that I can imagine perfectly what I must look like, having seen Rita Hayworth smile enough times.

Kara shrugged again, but with a smile this time. "It's to be small, Major. Gotta make some adjustments."

She reached out, touching Winters' lapel. "At least you can get into your jacket." Kara herself was wearing an odd mix of John's clothes and a few oversized garments of her own.

"I'm also swimming in it, along with the rest of my clothes," I say, looking down at myself. "I'm hoping the clothes box will be at least somewhat accommodating."

"Better than being all squished up," said Kara, with an immodest adjustment of herself. She barked out a laugh, not jumping this time at the sweeping boom of it. "I guess you know."

I can't help but laugh at that, and I imagine that's something that would take some getting used to if you haven't had one all your life. "You'll get used to it, at least for as long as you need to," I assure her. "And hopefully I'll get used to having - er - these," I add, gesturing vaguely at my chest area.

"Feel like I need a bra for these, too," said Kara with a glance down at her bits. Thankfully, she left it at that. "You'll need one of those, if you still plan to go running."

"I do still plan on running," I confirm. "This isn't going to keep me from that any more than snow did. Though - this is a little embarrassing - would you be able to help me find one? I have no idea what I'm looking for." I give a slight shrug. "I didn't really pay much attention to my mother and sister's unmentionables."
