Being the man around the house was a role Devon enjoyed and took seriously, especially when it meant he got to do things like carry an axe over his shoulder while he and Ellie looked for a tree that actually looked something like a Christmas tree. The compound was all decked out for the holiday, and it only made sense that they get a tree of their own for their hut. It made things feel a like home, even though there probably wasn't any place in California where you could go chop down your own tree.

And he had to admit that Morgan's arrival only helped in that regard. It wouldn't have been Christmas or any other holiday without him O-facing through Ellie's dinners.

It was hard not to be excited about the prospect of getting a tree. Christmas was one of Ellie's favorite holidays, and things just hadn't seem the same with the hut not being decorated. She'd been feeling a little homesick because of it, though now, with the prospect of getting a tree to find a way to decorate, she wasn't feeling it so much anymore.

Walking next to Devon, and bundled up warmly, she couldn't help but turn her head and smile up at him. That he was more than willing to do this said a lot to her - it didn't matter what kind of tree they would eventually find.

"I'm sure there's one close by we can take," she mused, as they walked along. He might've been able to carry it, but she didn't want him to have to lug a tree far if he didn't have to.

Devon was really hoping there would be, because the idea of trying to take a whole tree back to the hut if they got far was not one he was looking forward to. Not that he'd refuse Ellie - he'd probably just end up asking John for help.

"There better be," was all the admission he would make on it, because as soon as the words left his mouth, Devon spotted something that wasn't a giant shrub trying to be a tree. "Hey, how's that one?" he asked, coming to a stop to point it out. "It has the potential to be an awesome pretend Christmas tree."

Ellie had noticed the tree even before Devon had pointed it out. The smaller tree was exactly what their hut needed, but it was big enough to certainly pass as what it was supposed to be. Her expression brightened a little bit.

"That's perfect," she said, already heading over to get a better look at it. She circled it with a critical eye, though she already could tell it looked just as good up close. "This should fit in the hut, too."

"Perfect," Devon repeated in a pleased tone. It did look pretty good for the selection they had. He hefted the axe up - this was the part he'd really been looking forward to - and gave Ellie a grin. "One Bartowski-Woodcomb tradition coming right up."
