Interplanetary Travel 101: This Is Not Kansas

She checked the seals on her Hazmat suit a few more times and then made sure the hoses were working properly, which they were. Lam was fairly confident the suit was sound -- she did this every time -- and stepped up to the shimmering ripple of the gate, her hands full of equipment to deal with just about anything save major surgery. SG-12 was still ( Read more... )

"That's a little warm for a tropical island." There weren't many people who would dress like that, even if that was all the clothes box gave them, so Harry wondered if she was a new arrival. That he hadn't seen her around before told him nothing because he hadn't really been concentrating on who was around. He smiled at her anyway because it never hurt to be friendly.

"All I've got at the moment," Lam said, squinting at the man and folding her arms. Not for the first time, she cursed Tomlin and the bag situation. There were good khakis and a black shirt in there, at least.

"I know the feeling." He didn't go barefoot by choice, after all. He held out his hand to her. "Harry. I'm yet to decide how much the island hates me."

"Doctor Carolyn Lam," she said and took the offered hand a bit dubiously. "The fact that you're here is probably enough of a clue. This place is definitely weird."

Probably weirder than Stargate Command, wormholes, and aliens.

"It's very weird," he agreed. "A lot of it doesn't make sense." It was never possible to get used to the nonsensicalness of it, either. "Is that a medical doctorate?"

"Medical," she said, frowning at a palm tree as she released his hand. "I used to be an infectious disease specialist at the Center for Disease Control." And as she had signed a non-disclosure document, she she wasn't about to mention the Stargate program. For now, the CDC would do. "I suppose it would be too much to hope for if things did make sense."

"There's not much use for that here, thank goodness." He supposed that if there was the whole community would have been wiped out. It was bad enough when colds did the rounds. "I'm a doctor too. In the Navy."

"Doctors are doctors," Lam said quietly, folding her arms and studying him for awhile. "Specialties notwithstanding. As long as I'm keeping people healthy, I'm doing my job."

He nodded. "You're right. That is what's important. So you're a doctor here too?"

"Ah, well. I'm a doctor," she said with a slight frown. "Just not affiliated with anything here yet. I guess there's probably someone I'm supposed to talk to about that."

"Dr Beckett," he confirmed. "I think there are spaces if you want a shift there. But I'll warn you, there's never many people that need treating."

She filed that familiar name (Atlantis expedition) away and nodded. The SGC went days without anything going wrong besides the usual check up, check ins, and routine things. She could handle inactivity. Besides, she had her computer with various research projects sitting on its hard drives.

Boredom wasn't going to be an issue.

"Never underestimate the power of people finding ways to injure themselves. There's always room for more hand when it comes down to it. I caught a glimpse of the clinic earlier. It seems decent." More likea field hospital, but she'd done work in worse conditions, not that she was at any liberty to explain.

"It is pretty good. There's a lot of stuff we don't have, but also a lot of stuff we don't run out of." And he was very glad about that too. "It's not too bad a place to work in."

Lam was certain she couldn't be anything but a doctor, so a doctor was what she was going to be. She eyed the man for awhile, listening without comment until he was finished speaking. He must be talking about that whole 'magic' aspect again. Mitchell had warned her about that. In her line of work whatever 'magic' looked like, it was usually some sort of advanced technology, so she gave little stock to that aspect of the Island and refused to give it preferential treatment. There was no sense in getting excited about cupboards that never ran out of things or restocking shelves ( ... )

He couldn't be sure, from her description, just what she had because Harry had learnt not to assume that everyone was from the same time as him. Although her mention of antibiotics narrowed it down a little, at least as far as earliest date was concerned. The clinic supplies weren't his problem, though, which he was glad about.

"That will be useful. The clinic has a lot of things, but it also doesn't have a lot. I'm just glad that we haven't had to deal with any major disasters yet." He frowned. "At least not while I've been here." There were others he'd heard about, though.

"Well, hopefully the stuff I did bring will help in case we ever do," Lam said crisply. "It appears I'm going to be here for awhile or at least until my team back home figures out I'm missing and sends a ship for the lot of us."
