Cain almost never thought he'd see the day arrive. After everything they had been through, he highly suspected that the only reason he was getting married was because he was owed some happiness. Though Angela was gone, her impeccable and perfect clothes were still laid out the morning of and Cain had taken heavily to tradition and found his way to ( Read more... )

By the time he got back to the Homestead, Cain was looking for a drink. The thing was, yeah, the wedding was good. It was what he wanted. This part, the reception part where there was food and fawning and everything he could live without? He could definitely give it a pass. Still, he had a slightly stupid grin on his face as he stood there with his drink and watched Glitch from where he stood, happy to imbibe all the alcohol he could and get past this part until they could abscond away privately.

He was well on his way to drinking more than was good for him, but Coraline looked like she was having a good time and that was all that Adam Carter had it in him to care about, right now. He walked over to Cain and clapped him on the shoulder.

"Congratulations."

He even knew enough to make the smile melt into his eyes. He'd always known how to play a role.

Cain glanced to his side, giving Adam a happy and satisfied look as he stuck out a hand to shake, glad to see him there. "How are you holding up?" he asked, pitching his voice quieter so it was just between them.

"Come on, mate," said Adam, squeezing Cain's hand. "Don't talk about that today. You're happy? You look happy."

"Well, I married my best friend, it's his birthday, and I'm...happy," Cain admitted with a long exhalation, finding it strange to admit. "So it's a pretty good day, especially considering I was worried I was going to get married while I was ten."

"Good," said Adam and clapped his friend on the back. For that moment, at least, the warmth in his eyes and his voice were true enough.

"Eat, drink and be marry," he offered. "Make the most of being married, mate."

"Hopefully this one'll go better than the last." Not that Adora and him were a bad marriage, but the problem was that Jeb had only been ten annuals when he had been torn away and of his twenty-five annual marriage, he'd missed eight of them. "It'll be rough some days and I'm technically married to two men, but...I'm willing. I'm ready for it."

"Here's hoping."

Adam raised his glass. He meant it entirely. A smile lifted the corner of his mouth.

"My father used to say that nothing worth doing was ever easy. I say that to Cora all the bloody time, now."

"Is that why she keeps demanding we pull the impossible so she can go exploring?" Cain deadpanned, not exactly fond of the notion, but not upset either. "I'm just glad she and Luz didn't decide to combine forces to ruin today."

"I've promised to take her camping on the other island," he said, and he still will, once he gets his head together again.

Adam snorted.

"I had her on strict instructions."

"To which I'm sure she didn't react well," Cain filled in that blank in a deadpan. For all that he loved Coraline, he never really would get used to that ...spirit of hers, he was sure. "Well, give her some fun while I'm gone with Glitch. Just don't tell her I said that."

"Well, no, but it's getting easier to bend her to my will." He grinned. His blue eyes were weary. "I feel like I spend my whole life making sure she has fun so I don't have time to think."

He cleared his throat.

"You guys got honeymoon plans?"

"DG's babysitting the kids and the soldiers to make sure no one burns down our home," Cain began with the most practical of the reasons. "Then we find somewhere with a roof atop our heads so Glitch won't want to just bolt on me. Couple days to ourselves, I figure, then I'll be ready to come back from the wilderness."

"Can't trust bloody soldiers," said Adam, laughing. He held up his hands in apology almost immediately. "Spook humour. The rest of it sounds good, though. Take some time. Much as you can get, anyway."

"I don't think it'll be too long," Cain assured. "Glitch and I are both fairly over-the-top when it comes to protecting Az and DG, so leaving them alone for more than a few days is out of the question." He still had nightmares, sometimes, of Azkadellia wandering into a cave too deep, too riddled with evil and spirits.

"I'll swing by if you like," said Adam, sipping from the glass in his hand. "Coraline's so used to having breakfast with soldiers I'm going to have to keep bringing her over here anyway."
