It was a testament to how much time it had been since he'd last heard her that it took Sasan as long as he did to recognize the sound. He was sprawled in bed, three-quarters of the way through a battered copy of Fight Club (yes, he read actual books on occasion, when the mood struck) when he heard it, a sort of snuffling noise coming from the ( Read more... )

"Oh, they're probably not that bad," Serena said, waving a hand. She'd come down to this floor to talk to Lyla - it seemed like she hadn't seen the other girl in ages, not since the ball - but seeing as she wasn't around, Sasan and a really fat dog was about as good. She knew him vaguely from having helped Atia with that party a while back, of course, but even if she hadn't, there'd have been no stopping her asking questions. "Why is that dog wearing a dress?"

"Because... that's just what she does," Sasan said after a brief moment of blank staring as he thought about the subject, still a little out of sorts. "Or rather it's just what her owner does. Did." Did? Assuming Mimi was still magically back home as well, he supposed Tori would still be rocking the doggy couture somewhere, but lines of thought like that made his head hurt. More than trying to figure out what he was going to do with this thing did, even.

"Serena, this is Mimi LaRue. Say hello, Mimi," he said, turning the dog around to face her and ignoring the niggling feeling in the back of his head that said he might have even missed the little critter.

Serena grinned, reaching out to pet the pug. "Hey there, Mimi." From the way Sasan was talking, it didn't sound like Mimi was an island pet, though there seemed to be a lot of those going around. Actually, she was kind of jealous, because everyone had pigs now, but Blair would have killed her if she'd got one of those. She'd heard there were puppies, too, but she'd apparently missed the boat on that. "So her owner was someone you knew at home, I take it?" It sounded like one of the island's tricks.

"Yeah," he said, sounding a little wistful for a second as he shifted Mimi around in his arms. "She's Tori Spelling's. I don't really know what she's doing here." The island finally decided to mess with him and it did it by giving him something that wasn't even his? He wasn't sure whether to be annoyed or relieved.

Then Mimi started squirming and he decided to settle firmly on annoyed.

"Wait, Tori Spelling, the actress?" She stifled a soft laugh, more surprised than anything else. While she'd been too young for 90210, some names did stick around. "Maybe she just showed up to torture you. The island's been known to do that."

Really, though, Serena would have preferred getting a dog to the flash drive she'd found. That had just been playing dirty, though she supposed that was all that could be expected from a land mass, sentient or otherwise.

"That's my T," he said with a fond grin. Much as it pained him to admit it, he really did miss her. A lot. And suddenly, his armful of dog was reminding him of that fact more than ever. "And I'm starting to think that just might be the case," he said thoughtfully.

The fact that he called his friend by her first initial was familiar and, thus, totally endearing to Serena. "Well, there are worse things to have show up out of nowhere," she said, sounding a little hopeful. "I mean, even in the dress, she's pretty cute. And I heard about this one guy just showing up and exploding, so... dog beats bomb."

Sasan was a born complainer, but even he was hard-pressed to find a way to refute that claim. "Point," he said, nodding solemnly before smiling. "I guess she's not so bad, in her way," he conceded after a second. He hoisted Mimi up so he could look her in the face. "Are you?"

"She's actually pretty cute," Serena offered. Sure, the dog looked more likely to waddle than walk, and it was wearing a dress, but that didn't fully negate any innate canine cuteness. "I mean, she could probably use a wardrobe change, but..."

"Something that fits, at the very least," Sasan agreed, looking thoughtful. "I mean, not that I'm about to start rooting through the clothes box for doggy dresses or anything, but hypothetically speaking, I'd certainly go with some more flattering colors."

"Oh, definitely. Besides," she said, nodding, "the clothes box will probably just give them to you now. And in terrible colors and patterns and designs. That seems to be its method. I think it got teleported here in the eighties and not in an even remotely good way."

Alright, he'd had his suspicions for a while, but now it was official: Sasan liked the kid. "Well, there's something to look forward to," he deadpanned. "She probably won't even notice anything's different."

"Yeah, neither does my friend Chuck," she sighed, shaking her head, barely suppressing a smile. "In fact, he's about the only person I know who seems to have made friends with the thing. Sometimes I think he thinks we're still in the Hamptons or something."

"New York, eh? Not bad. You know, sometimes I really envy the delusional," Sasan considered, with a barely-there smile of his own. "Clearly we should introduce them, they'd probably hit it off."

"I kind of doubt it," she said. "Delusional or not, Chuck isn't a real big fan of dogs. Or animals in general, really. Which, actually, would probably make introducing him to Mimi all the more fun."
