Aeris knew it was going to be a wonderful day from the moment she woke. The rain was pouring outside, and she had found a wonderful new outfit in the clothing box. The sound of the rain was akin to a living, breathing static, that blurred out the silence of the island, and brought every little detail of it to life. She had waited at first, to make ( Read more... )

It wasn't cabin fever, per se, but...yeah, it kinda was.
He'd spent the past few weeks keeping to himself, still shaken up from arriving at this remote location. If he hadn't been hiding out in the compound somewhere, brushing everybody off who tried to talk to him, he would walk back down to the beach and just...stare. Not long, just long enough to have a smoke, but Larry couldn't help but feel that if he'd come from the water, there could maybe be a way to get back. But so far, no boats. Not even a fucking raft with bedsheets as sails.

It was raining today. And not just a nice misting, a full-on downpour. But with everybody crowded inside of the compound, there was no solace, no place for him to be by himself, still trying to sort out the mess his life had seemingly turned into overnight.

So off he went, shrugging on a rain jacket, and grabbing the last cigarette from his pack, as well as a lighter, because sometimes you just need a goddamn smoke.

She noticed the arrival of someone else almost immediately. The sound of the rain was different, and the boardwalk echoed with the sound of footsteps that were not her own.

Curious, she glanced toward her new company. The man was unfamiliar, but she smiled brightly anyway. "Its a wonderful change of pace, don't you think?"

Larry managed a half-smile.

"Change of pace? You're telling me."

He click-clicked the lighter and lit his cigarette, taking one long drag from it and dropping his hand back to his side.

Change of pace. Yeah, Larry thought. You could call it that.

She shrugged, still smiling. "But its a nice change. Its cool and eventful." She nodded. She didn't see many other people out, so she assumed not everyone agreed, but that still meant that people had to gather together to avoid it, rather than spread across the island.

"Things change often here?" Larry asked, taking another drag off his cigarette and pulling his jacket a little bit closer to him.

If he were being honest with himself, he wasn't sure he could handle changes other than it the weather for the moment. Losing Joe, Eddie...hell, even Orange, then landing here had been change enough to last him a lifetime.

"Sometimes. The island likes to keep things interesting." Sometimes its definition of 'interesting' was more detrimental than people might have appreciated, but the concept remained the same.

"How long have you been here?" Larry asked after another quick pause. He brought a hand to his brow and wiped off some of the rain water.

"And I didn't catch your name," he added as an afterthought.

"A few months." She shrugged. Many people had been here longer, but this was home now, whether she'd lived here a matter of months or years. A moment later, she smiled brightly. "Aeris Gainsborough."

A few months.

The second time he'd heard that story. Looks like he was in for the long haul. It was an incredibly unsettling thought, one that he had been mulling over these past few days, and the passage of time had done nothing to ease the tension he felt.

"Larry," he said, bringing the cigarette up to his lips but looking a little concerned. "You want another jacket?"

She glanced down at her waterlogged clothes curiously, inspecting it for damage or dirt, before shrugging. "No, this one is still fine."

She smiled, glancing up at the falling rain once more. He hadn't offered his hand, and she wasn't in the mood to adhere to the custom just now anyway. "Will that burn in the rain?"

Larry looked down at his cigarette disdainfully.

"It's getting soggy," he said, flicking it to the ground. "Jesus, my last one too. You wouldn't happen to have one on you, would you?"

She frowned slightly, and shook her head. "No, I'm sorry. If my friend, Cid, were here, I'm sure he'd share some of his."
