For Jess, the train of thought between feeling frustrated with about a half dozen things that'd been going on and making her way to the ball diamond to hit some balls was a straightforward one. Smacking things with a bat was just what the doctor ordered, and if in the process she got a little practice in, so much the better.
Sam'd been great about everything, but the truth was that there was no hope of ever recreating her old life here no matter how many people her own age she met and no matter how many parties she showed up at. And sure, she was adaptable, but where she came from that meant being able to cope with last minute changes of plans and unexpected news, not demons and magic islands. Practically the only thing she felt remotely equipped to cope with was the unexpected addition to the Winchester family, which seemed to be the thing everyone else was having the most trouble with.
She was doing her best, but it was all just going to take a little more time. Especially since every time it all came up, it seemed like the Winchesters had more to tell.
She threw the ball up in the air, swung hard and missed, then tried again and thwacked it nearly out of sight.
The problem with batting practice alone - and with just one ball - was that you had to go chasing off after it yourself. With a sigh she dropped the bat and started jogging across the diamond.
