No place like home
It has been quite a long few months since Bran had found the cottage by the stream, and he's really quite ready to have this be a project that is finished. When Alex disappeared, he'd been ready to move out into it, but really wanted it to be finished first, and at that particular time there'd been a bit of a chunk out of the bathroom floor.
Gil and Abby and Dairine had been invaluable, every last one knowing considerably more about how to make a house liveable than Bran. Paul had got plans from Violet Baudelaire, before she disappeared, for how to make the plumbing work, and Dairine, having finally figured out how to make a proper telescope lens, had turned her attention to building a solar panel. She and Abby had processed the silicon, and Bran still isn't sure how any of that worked despite the books Abby'd given him on the subject, though he has now learned the silicon is found virtually everywhere. Who knew?
Meanwhile, he and Will and Paul had been taking care of the more structural and cosmetic things--they may not understand how to harness solar energy, but they can swing a hammer well enough, and fit windows and fix the cracks in the floor. And the nearly-finished result, Bran thinks, leaning back to peer up at the cottage with his arms crossed over his chest, is very nearly perfect.
