Crash Landing- Betty's Debut

Jul 07, 2008 21:48

The floor shook beneath Betty's feet and everyone stumbled from side to side uneasily as they tried to claw their way around the inside of the helicopter. Her light blue eyes were wide as she watched the two massive men hanging from the aircraft's base struggling against each other. Another shake brought her to her knees with a small shriek and she ( Read more... )

After awhile on the island, it kind of got into Freddy's head that he shouldn't be surprised when people appeared out of thin air. That it happened all the time, that it was, in some weird twisted way, normal and really shouldn't have been any kind of a surprise. And yet, even after about a year and a half, he still stared like an idiot whenever it happened. He was just happy that more often than not they appeared a ways away, not directly in front of, or right on top of. That would scare the crap out of him, island weirdness now being normal or not. Just walking along the beach and then thud, new person running straight into you after appearing a milimeter away.

Being the nice guy he was though, he couldn't just turn the other way and pretend he'd seen nothing. As tempted as he was to just do that on some occasions.

"Hey!" He called, walking towards the woman who'd appeared. As he got closer he thought she looked like that girl he'd met once, Death, but shrugged the thought off before it settled. "You okay?"

The man approaching Betty looked familliar, and not in a good way. In fact, the closer he got to her, the more she was sure that this was none other than Emil Blonsky. And that would be Bruce was here, too, right?

Frantically, she scrambled to her feet and began to back away from him, stumbling in the sand a bit as she went. She wasn't sure how she got here, on this island (of which New York didn't have any still plentifully populated with trees), but she did know that if she and Emil has crashed here, than surely her father and Bruce had, too. She had to find him and make sure he was alright.

Holding up a hand between them, Betty managed to choke out, "Stay. Away. From me."

That was a bit more defensive than he usually expected from a new arrival, but if he'd been a hot chick suddenly alone on a beach with a strange guy, he figured he'd have been cautious too. Instead of pressing, Freddy just held up his hands, which were clearly empty, and watched the woman with a flat and hopefully helpful expression. He wasn't even sure if helpful could be an expression, but it was worth a shot.

"Woah." He said, standing exactly in the same spot and not moving forward. He didn't need her getting any more on edge, after all. "It's okay. Let me take a guess, about five seconds ago you were someplace lacking in the palm tree department and now don't know where the hell you are?" He He waved his hands vaguely, his eyebrows raising expectantly. "Ringin' any bells?"

"Yeah, that's right," she said, still on the defensive.

"But then, you were there, too, Blonsky. You crashed with me. You were hanging on the bottom of the helicopter. Don't play mind games with me. Now, where's Bruce?"

Why was he pretending to be nice? He didn't think of her as anything but a piece of meat; her father's prize scientist daughter. Something he could try to take from the gaint green Hulk, which he and the General feared and Betty loved.

Freddy stared at her quietly. Hands still poised in the air, eyebrows still drawn upwards expectantly. There just was no way to process that and react accordingly at the same time. Instead, he looked up, mulled over the information that had been handed to him, and hen glanced back to the woman as his hands fell to his sides. And through out all of this, he was resisting the urge to just voice his thoughts of 'What the fuck?' and the temptation to start laughing.

"You've made a seeerious mistake, lady." He said, unable to keep the grin from twisting his mouth any longer. "Do I look like the kinda guy that hangs from helicopters?" He smothered down the bubble of laughter, leaving it caught in his throat and he had to take a minute for himself. That was just... fantastic. If he had a clone somewhere that hung from helicopters, then that was a man worthy of his face. Fuck, this probably wasn't as funny as he thought it was. "My name ain't Blonsky, its Newandyke. Freddy Newandyke? You wanna calm the fuck down so I can help you?"

Freddy? Betty took another long glance at the man's face. He sure as hell looked like Blonsky, but maybe a younger version. Still, he wasn't the same man that had harrassed her (and Bruce) before. The more she examined his face, the more relaxed she felt. Identical they may be, but this certainly was not Emil Blonsky.

And so, she took a deep breath to settle her nerves and wrapped her arms around her stomach as she started to feel progressively more and more ill.

"Hey," he said, more softly this time around and took a few steps closer now that he was close to sure that she wasn't going to run or kick him in the balls. "Hey, its okay. You're on an island called Tabula Rasa. It's... okay, so its pretty fuckin' weird. It just sorta grabs people from wherever the hell they were. Doesn't discriminate, y'know?" He was never going to get over how insane that explanation always succeeded in sounding.

"It happens a lot." He shrugged. "Anywhere, any time... literally any time. I dunno where you're from, but I'm from Los Angles. And nineteen-ninety two. Weird, huh?" He offered a slight smile. "If you come with me, I'll take you back to the Compound. Or we can stay here, whatever. Just... just anything you need, right? Ask. I've been here a long ass time, and you gotta be confused as hell."

Betty listened very quietly to his explaination, her face falling as he kept going, until finally she lowered her eyes to the ground, "New York. Two-thousand eight."

Finally, after another long moment where her mind fluttered around the obscure explaination, Betty looked up at him again, decidedly shutting down to avoid a major headache, "Thank you."

"What's the Compound?"

'it's the main building." He explained, absently waving a hand in it's direction. "Kinda like a college dorm. Rooms, kitchen, bathrooms...a possessed rec-room. The standard, y'know." He shrugged. "People have their owns places all over the island, but that's basically where everybody comes together for the necessities. And air conditioning. Swear to God, you'll see for yourself, it gets to be hot as hell here."

He was about to invite her that direction, but paused. "What's your name?" He asked curiously.

"The Compound... It sounds like an insane asylum or prison," she smirked, a possessed Rec-room?

"Dr. Elizabeth Ross, but you can call me 'Betty.' What's yours?"

Betty Ross. Betty Ross who had called him someone named Blonsky and had been upset at him on the behalf of some one named Bruce.

Holy fucking shit. He was talking to the Hulk's girlfriend. Betty Ross, while not exactly one of the strongest female significant other of a comic book hero, was still pretty fucking cool. And if she had called him Blonsky, then that meant...Jesus Christ. Somewhere out there, there was a rogue KGB agent with a gamma twitch masquerading about with his face. How fucking super cool was that? He just really hoped that she meant he looked like him pre-transformation into giant scaley son of a bitch.

Otherwise, that would just kind of suck.

"Uh." He said, re-organising his facculties. "Freddy, remember?" Some scientist. It took a rather large amount of effort to keep from fishing for more info. How fucking often does a guy get to talk to the Hulk's girlfriend?

"Oh, right... sorry," Betty blushed a little, embarrassed by her slip of memory, "I was a little freaked out before. I remember now."

With a smile, or at least the best one she could manage, Betty said, "It's nice to meet you, Freddie. Again, I'm sorry."

She cast a glance in his direction and saw him looking at her funny, like he wanted to pounce on her or something, "Um... are you alright?"

"No worries." He said shrugging again, for lack of a better gesture. "Nice t'meet you too. Aside from the fact I look like somebody you clearly don't wanna be seein' any time soon." He grinned a bit, and wondered vaguely if the Hulk was going to come bursting from the jungle at some unexpected moment and make the same mistake in terms of his identity. That would really suck. Being shot in the face was bad enough, being beaten into a pulp by eight feet of green gamma induced roidrage would probably be even worse.

"I'm...great." Lame. "Just promise if anyone you know shows up who doesn't like the Blonsky guy, you'll vouch for me."

Betty nodded vaguely, "Ookay."

"Although, I highly doubt that anyone I know will be here." She peered around them at the island, watching the wind blow the trees, and the tide rolling in. Bruce would like it here. The atmosphere was calming. Then again, those on the island were trapped, and he probably would go ape thinking about ways to get off, instead of enjoying the scenery.

"Besides, you don't much look like him anymore," she said simply, "When I landed here, he was about ten feet tall, 6 feet wide and pure bone and muscle."
