School on an island still means homework. It just means island homework. Karen likes all of her teaches: Miss Marian is really kind and helps Karen with hard words when she's reading, and Miss Meg's funny and loud and really really really good at maths. Karen's not very good at maths. She's got some sums to do, and a book to read for Miss Marian, but she thinks she'll do her art first. Art is definitely more fun, and Miss Charlie is always glittery. Karens wants to be glittery when she grows up.

Karen's supposed to be doing a picture of someone. She thought about doing ShorHor or Puffin, but then Miss Charlie said it ought to be a person, and Karen's not even allowed to take ShorHor to class, so explaining him to Miss Charlie was kind of difficult. Nobody understands about ShorHor unless he's actually there. She's sitting at one of the tables in the rec-room in a fairy costume, kicking her bare feet. There are all these grownups around, but none of them are standing still long enough for Karen to actually draw them. Karen sighs and settles for drawing a big sort of circle on the paper. It's a bit big, so whoever she draws is going to have to have a big sort of face.

Karen sighs and huffs her fair curls out of her eyes. Pretty soon, Shadow's going to be nagging her about getting another haircut.

All Karen knows is that homework's hard (even art), haircuts are stupid, and life isn't fair.
