After weeks of preparations, the Dawn Treader was finally ready to begin her journey round the island. Her new crew was a curious mix of capable naval officers and those who had never set foot aboard a ship, but the last few weekends of training had given him confidence that they would all work well together.
Caspian was gladder than he could say that Lucy and Edmund were both there to accompany him on this expedition. Young they might be, but they knew the Dawn Treader almost as well as he did. It was a bit like old times again with them there, even if it was not quite right without Eustace. And although being on the ship again made him wish for Drinian and Rhince and their steady and wise counsel, and the brave and gallant Reepicheep, he felt that this crew would be just as capable as his old one.
The day promised to be fine for sailing, and as the large purple sail caught the wind and the ship began to move away from the dock, Caspian could have sworn that the ship herself was glad to be underway. He most certainly was; the feel of the deck beneath his feet and the wind in his face stirred him in a way he had not felt since Narnia.
