It had been easy enough to avoid people the past few days. In fact she'd gotten rather good at it, seeing people just enough that no one would worry, but not for long enough that they could ask her about things. It wasn't something that could last forever, especially not with those that were close to her.

Seeing Ianto disassembling what looked like furniture outside of his hut, Tosh made a point of heading that way. Times like these and she did need her friends. "Moving out?" Jackson was asleep in his sling, cuddled up to her back, "Were you planning on letting me know?"

Ianto looked up from his work and gave Tosh a gentle smile. Nothing condescending or pitying. Just the smile of an understanding friend.

"Not at all," he said, setting aside the saw and cleaning his hands as best he could on the legs of his jeans as he walked closer. "I got rid of some things. So now I have to replace them. And how are you two?"

"Did you?" She asked it without really wanting an answer. More something to fill the silences she found herself uncomfortable with. "I'm-" Tosh had to pause before she could answer him. "I'm alright. Better than I thought I would be?"

She wasn't, not really. She couldn't afford to fall apart, not with Jackson depending on her, "I suppose it was all inevitable."

Carefully, Ianto placed a hand on her shoulder, rubbing it along her upper back in the most friendly, comforting way he knew.

"No," he said. "You both made a good go of it. Sometimes things don't work out, but that doesn't mean they were doomed from the start."

"A good go of it," they weren't words she believed. It was the sort of thing said to placate someone. To make them feel better. "Ianto. I wasn't ever what he wanted. Not at home, and not here. He settled on this because it was all he could have."

That she believed.

Tosh's words tasted bitter even though Ianto hadn't spoken them. He licked his lips.

"Then you're better off without him. And that's what you have to focus on."

"Yes. It is." It was what she was trying to remember. That she was better off without him, and that this would have just happened later, hurting her more. "Easier to say than to believe."

"Just keep saying it," he said. "And you'll start believing it. Because it's true. Tosh.."

Ianto sighed and shook his head. "You're so much better than that. You deserve better than him."

"I should hire you. You can come along every morning and just repeat that over and over," Tosh made it a joke, her voice trying for light. It didn't quite manage it, not completely. "I'm too busy to think of much now, other than Jackson."

Ianto gave her a tight smile in return. "You'd have to pay me in better than mangoes, though," he said.

"You know I'm here for you and Jackson whenever you need me, right?" Even as he asked it, he though he should pop over more often. He would pop over more often. It was silly to make Tosh come to him.

"I know you are. Thank you." The hut wasn't really where she wanted to be spending time right now. It had been built for four people, Tosh, Mimi, Owen and Jackson. Now only two of those lived in it, and it seemed to her that it creaked with emptiness.

"Maybe we should come visit more."

"You're always welcome here," he said. "Charlie will be disappointed only because it means she'll have to be suitably dressed more often," he added lightly with a smile. "But she'll get used to it."

"More suitably dressed? Just what to you two get up to all day?" It was easier to talk of other things. To joke and tease, even if her delivery of it was stiff.

It was a bit of a struggle not to laugh, but Ianto managed, and also pulled an innocent face to go with his words. "I get up to plenty. She just lazes around in bed all day, wrapped up in a sheet and spoiling Banon. I think it's an American thing."

"Must be lovely," Tosh teased back, an ease returning the longer she spent talking to her friend. "I'll keep that in mind, once Jackson is old enough."

"Bring Jackson over here, and that might give her enough of a reason to get dressed," he said. "Then you can go back to your hut and its sheets."
