Cecily could not help but feel that her sense of adventure was dwindling as her time on the island grew. She did not like to think herself as someone quite as drab as either Ms. Prism or Lady Bracknell, but there were days where she felt there was just nothing else to do but something from home, like play the piano... which is exactly what she ( Read more... )

They had never been introduced, but he knew who she was. He couldn't help but be curious- what was it about the muggle, precisely, that made Albus entertain her presence.

He walked over and leaned against the piano and watched her with an inquisitive sort of stare.

Cecily looked up at the young man, drawing her hands from the keys and placing them gently on her lap. "Why, hello there."

"Hello," he returned, flashing an absent sort of smile. "Cecily, isn't it?"

She paused for a moment, a little taken aback by his knowing her name. She looked over him, trying to see if she had forgotten him. "I am terribly sorry, but my memory has seem to be slipping away from me recently. There are so many people on this island and I have found that I do not have the memory for faces that I used to claim. Have we met?"

"No, we haven't," Barty told her. "We do have, however, a mutual acquaintance. Albus Dumbledore?" She was English, but he wondered when from. Probably before his time, but almost certainly after Albus's. He hoped, anyway. That's what happened when you were a hundred and fifty damn years old.

Cecily cocked her head slightly to the side and let her eyes wander around the room while she tried to think of who the man was talking about. "I'm sorry, but I don't believe I..."

Suddenly she gasped, bringing her hand to her mouth, "But do you mean Bus?"

"That's the ticket," Barty said cheerfully. Bus, was it? Oh, dear. He'd have to monogram something for Albus as a 'get well' gift.

She looked over the man with a smile growing widely upon her face. "Why, he never corrected me all this time!" Her laugh reflected how curious she thought the situation was.

"Pray, how do you know him?"

"He's polite that way," Barty said with a dismissive wave of his hand.

"He was my headmaster at school. Of course he was much older at the time." This was going to be just plain old fun.

"A headmaster of a school! I do believe that is quite like him," she spoke almost to herself as she thought of how the situation was. She stood and extended her hands. "A pleasure to meet you, Mr.?"

"Isn't it, though," Barty murmured, then blinked, looking at her hand. He looked back to her face, seemed to be considering something for a moment, and then extended his own hand to take hers.

"Bartemius Crouch, Jr."

"I am sorry to say that I do not believe that Bus-- well, I mean Albus-- ever mentioned you. You do seem like a person who would make an impression. Of course, Bus is so-- I'm sorry, I do mean Albus-- so very secretive. He always seems to be hiding something marvelous."

"He's a terrifically private sort, our Bus," Barty said, smiling thinly, with humor. "I'm neither surprised nor offended. An the reason he seems that way?" Barty added, leaning forward as if he were departing a great secret, "is that he is hiding something marvelous. Always."

"I do not know why we bother to put up with it," she added jokingly, a light laugh following her words. "Unless, of course, you happen to know his secrets, which I would be very glad to hear, dear Bartemius."
