Trance recognized the girl from her classes with Dr. House. She racked her brain for the name. Brenda, Becca, Becky! That was it, Becky. Trance knelt down next to her.
"No," she said. "And before you ask, it's really really dumb, so I'm not sure I wanna tell." She hugged her knees up to her chest and put her chin on them.
"Don't worry," Trance said, putting her hand on Becky's. "The only one here I think is really dumb is my boyfriend." Her smile said she was kidding, of course. "I won't laugh or anything, I promise."
"...I don't have a last name," Becky said with a big sigh. "I... I just don't. It's so weird, and I really didn't even think about it until someone asked. I'm sure that I musta had one at some point. I just can't remember what it could be."
"Well," Trance said slowly, "do you remember your parents? When was the last time you saw them?" She didn't think it was a horrible think and her tone reflected that.
"I last saw my mom about a month before I got here," said Becky, trying not to get too sad. "I went to visit her and give her some money. And my dad, I ain't never seen him."
"And how often did you use your last name? I mean, it's not a bad thing. I've never really had a real last name. At least not like most people have one." All she had was a name and place of birth. In this incarnation, at least.
"All the time, until I lived in Old Town, where you just... didn't. Whores don't typically need last names. Or even their real first ones." Becky shrugged.
"It sounds to me like it just wasn't important to you. And you've been through so many things here, is it really that hard to believe you'd forget?" She squeezed Becky's hand. "It sounds awful, I know. But you still remember your mom and that's the important part, isn't it?"
"Becky, are you okay?"

"Spike," she said, a small smile blooming on her face.
