The Doctor found himself sometimes missing the oddest things. Momentary things, little quirks. A bottle of good wine. A chip shop. Bridges. Things came and went and didn't stay for very long, but when they were there, the feeling was quite intense ( Read more... )

Ianto always found walking the best means of shutting off his brain. But that had been before he had been gifted with a dog. Who insisted, now, on running ahead of him, curious to sniff the same thing she sniffed the day before with even greater interest.

The Doctor, however, was something she hadn't sniffed before, and, spying a human shaped figure ahead, she bounded off to investigate. "Fach," Ianto called after her, sharply, and in a blink the small puppy screeched to a halt, staring at the Doctor, body quivering with excitement, but looking for all the world in that moment like she was a well-trained dog. In that respect she was almost as deceptive as her owner.

The Doctor was not easily fooled, namely because the puppy was very, very small (and quite deserving of her name, then) and he knew full well that Ianto Jones had not had a dog all that long or he'd have heard about it.

He folded the penknife and put it back in his pocket. "Croeso," he said to the puppy, holding a hand out for her to sniff and giving Ianto a faint grin. "And who might you be then?"

The puppy inched forward, as if taking small steps would make her unnoticeable, and enthusiastically started licking his hand.

"That," he said, "is Banon. Be careful. She'll probably start nipping you in a bit."

"A good strong name," the Doctor said. Apparently he wasn't the only one to see that sort of thing in his dog. "Though a bit schizophrenic?" He let the puppy lick his hand, watching her with a little bit of caution.

Ayla watched him from the cover of the jungle. She was still unaccustomed to seeing men doing work such as this, and the cultivation, not simply collection, of plant life here was of great interest. The women of the Clan would often spill the seeds of plants and cover them to ensure germination for later collection, but they had not yet taken the leap to agriculture.

Curiosity got the best of her and she crept closer, out of hiding. She had learned may words of the Others, and had adopted some customs, such as wearing the strange covering called a shirt, but her appearance remained and anyone who might know could tell she was...primitive.

She ducked her head and averted her eyes, a lifetime of social conditioning influencing her behavior. She would not speak first. Not to a man. Not to the Doctor, even.

The Doctor looked up, flower in one hand, almost ready to leave the garden, having heard a step or two approaching. "Ayla," he greeted, posture and stance open to indicate that she could approach, though working with the whole submissive woman thing made him feel ill. Maybe she'd work past it eventually. Maybe.

"Doctor," she replied carefully, looking up at the flower in his hand as she avoided his eyes. "You have flower, is for...pret-i-fi-kay-shun?" she asked.

It semed to her that no one here was trained in medicine, and Glinda's lesson on the uses of floweres among the Others had been very helpful.

"Beautification," the Doctor clarified. "Some. For looking at. But also for good smells and for study. Learning." He slipped into the pidgin fairly easily.

It was probably mostly luck that they found the Doctor pretty quickly, and Karen had to hold back a shared amused look with Veronica when they approached him.

"So, hi," she started off, then just decided to get to the point, because they needed him on their side. "We have a giant favor to ask you."

The Doctor looked up, slowly, expression just barely dubious. "is this a 'Doctor, could you vanquish the dinosaurs invading my flat' giant favour, or a 'Doctor, could you humiliate yourself for charity' giant favour?"

Because you never could be sure. Not when it came to two of the more devious women he knew.

"More of the latter," Veronica said, smiling. "But we're not looking to humiliate you. We want you to help us get humiliate someone else." She realized a moment later that 'humiliate' was, perhaps, not the right word to be using in this context, but it still hit the general idea. "You saw the bulletin notice for the Drag Show?"

The Doctor was about to say yes, mouth open, when he paused. "I think I know where this is headed," he said, nodding for them to carry on and confirm his suspicion. "Though my legs look pretty damn good in a skirt."

Chase wound his way to the waterfall after having seen the bulletin board post and seeing his doom, which led him home to complain and when the Doctor hadn't been there, he'd made his way to find him and whine.

"I have mean, mean friends," he announced, dropping down onto the rock two over from where the Doctor was.

The Doctor was well-aware, but he played innocent very well, his gaze flicking over towards Chase as he kept carving a wee horse out of the driftwood. "You don't say," he remarked.

Chase took a long moment to realize just what was going on, but once it hit, he gave an offended and loud 'hey!' and sulked even more profusely, if such a thing were possible. Lodging one leg free, he kicked the Doctor in the thigh. "Abuse," he complained. "Such total abuse."

The Doctor's expression broke into a slow gleeful smile. "No, kicking me is abuse," he said. "Besides, I might have reasons for a vested interest."

It's entirely possible that Gwen's been looking for him, if only in a subconscious way. At any rate, it doesn't startle her nearly as much as it might have to actually stumble across him, although she hesitates before finally making her mind up about it and approaching, careful not to slip on the slick stones that surround the pool.

"Hullo," she greets from some five yards away, both hands braced against the small of her back, toes curling under inside her green Converse trainers, stomach extended before her like she was hiding a football under her shirt.

The Doctor might not have realised how pregnant Gwen was by now. Then again, he was a man, and even observant men could be quite thick. He rose to walk towards her, folding the knife away into his pocket. "P’nawn da, Gwen Petrelli," he said, smile soft and just barely tentative.

"How are you?" Gwen asks, partly because she genuinely wants to know and partly because she isn't certain what else to say. She hates that the gulf between them is so large now that she doesn't instinctively know. "I stopped by to see Rob, but you weren't there. Obviously."

The Doctor wasn't keen on the rift either, but he was terrible at solving this sort of thing. Everyone else's problems were fine. His own were not.

"I'm all right," he said, coming closer and fingering the not-quite-done horse. "Been trying to set Jane to rights...Stu's gone." It still was like a sucker punch in the gut to say it. "But things are going back to being things, and people need to carry on. You didn't mention the drag show to Rob, I hope."
