Eddie was sans child this morning and moving around the kitchen all the quicker for it. Said child had managed to get into the jam the moment Eddie brought her into the kitchen, so said child was now enjoying a nice warm bath while her mum tried to get bits of strawberry and gelatin out of her hair ( Read more... )

Ruth likes it when I eat breakfast, and I'm up so I figure I'll go get breakfast, and it smells pretty good when I walk in in my socks and I can't remember whether I combed my hair or not.

There's a guy sitting at the table, and I don't recognise him, which doesn't mean we haven't met, so I wave, just in case.

"Morning," said Eddie, giving him a wave in return. He didn't think he knew him, but that didn't mean he shouldn't be friendly. That was his job now. "Try the ham, it should still be hot from the frying pan."

"Smells good," I say, starting to help myself. "You make all this?"

I blush. Hell, I can't even work out how to open a damn can most often.

"More or less," said Eddie, surveying what he'd done. "Most of it I just found in the fridge and fried it up. Except the juice, I didn't fry the juice. I didn't make it myself either, it was just there."

"Well, it all looks pretty good. I can't even peel a damn lemon."

That's the wrong word, and I know it. I frown, trying to think.

"...Potato."

"I didn't do any of that today either," said Eddie with a cheerful shrug. "Just cut up the ham and cracked a few eggs. There's not really much to it. You should have some more if you're hungry."

"Thanks," I say, moving over to the coffee and pouring myself a cup. "Ruth likes it when I eat proper breakfast."

I shrug.

"She gets pissed when I forget."

"Everyone should eat a proper breakfast," said Eddie, though he didn't know who it was he was agreeing with. "I try to get my daughter to eat a proper breakfast too, only she mostly gets it all over herself."

"Hey, I get it all over myself sometimes too," I say, with an easy grin. "And I'm twenty two."

"I don't think you get it all over quite the way Emmy managed to get it all over," said Eddie. "Her mum's got her in the bath now, trying to get it all out. I think the t-shirt might be a lost cause."

"Probably not," I say, eating another mouthful of breakfast. "Not unless I want Ruth to kick my ass, anyway."

"Is Ruth the kind of person who'd do that?" said Eddie. "Ruth sounds like a really pretty name. The kind of person who's quiet, and knits."

"Ruth's a really pretty lady," I say, and, you know, she sorta is, even though she doesn't think she is. "But she's got a lotta rules."

"Yeah, I know people like that," said Eddie. "Eating breakfast isn't like a rule, though. It's more like a good idea."

I laugh and have to take a sip of coffee to make sure I don't cough.

I shake my head.

"You haven't met Ruth."

"Yeah, I guess I haven't," said Eddie, laughing a little too even though he didn't get the joke. "I promise I won't make it a rule, just a helpful suggestion."
