There were a lot of things that Daenerys Targaryen was skilled at. She could ride a horse better than any man she knew. She could stand her ground in a fight. She could sing sweetly while she plucked at the harp (a newly acquired skill and one that still required practice, but she was fairly good at it). She could embroider though she was still not ( Read more... )

Joffrey stood in the door of the recroom, his hands clasped tightly in front of him. Of course the girl would have whelped. Could she not just die like her brothers and her father had? But these thoughts showed not on his face, in fact his expression was contrite, though his words were still clipped. "I have come to make amends."

Now that he was cleaned up, Joffrey looked to be even more the miniature version of Billy than he had been before. It still made Dany sick to think on it, but she couldn't not look at him and appear a coward so she swallowed the bile that rose in her throat and met his gaze stubbornly. "Have you now?" she asked dubiously.

"Yes," But he did not move from the doorway, other than to take one step into the room. "I should not have behaved towards you the way I did. What has happened in our pasts is neither of our faults, and it was wrong of me to treat you so even if i was upset."

He managed to sound at least partially sincere, though his very words galled him.

It was a lucky thing that Dany knew little of Joffrey's rule in Westeros or she may have laughed at his attempt at apology. As it was, she was ignorant in such matters and only knew that the boy king before her had her throne and was supposed to be dead. Being dead hardly fazed Dany anymore. She eyed him warily like a doe misliking the scent of wolf upon a sheep. In the end, it was his appearance alone that won her sympathy for she could never have such strong feelings of hate towards any man who bore a face so similar to the one she held so dear. "Very well, your apology is accepted and I thank you for it, ser."

It was lucky for Joffrey as well that Dany did not know such things. Lucky for them both that he did not know he died at some point near. Such knowledge would have broken his tightly marshaled composure.

But he did not know these things, instead giving the woman a smile. The smile that had won over many when he was young, seemingly honest and open. "You have my thanks."

His game was underway.

She put down her knotwork (for it was more that than it ever would be knitting) and gave Joffrey 90% of her attention. The other 10 was, of course, always focused on Alys.

"Tell me, Joffrey, have you found your mother yet?" she asked, though there was no malice in her words, only mild curiosity.

He'd not expected her question, and his nod in response was slightly stiff. "I have. It is good to have her here." It was the truth, mostly, for all that she had fallen so low. But had they both not fallen in the same way?

"Consider yourself lucky then, there are many here without anyone from home." It was awkward, making conversation with him, but she supposed that she must do it if they were to refrain from killing each other on sight.

"I cannot imagine what it must have been for her after Uncle Jamie left." Those words were true, and much easier to say. "It would have been very difficult if she were not here. I am grateful for that."

He was actually. For all that Joffrey held his mother in disdain at times, she was still his mother, and a Lannister.

"Viserys was here for a time," Dany said while Alys rolled in her sleep to her back, clutching Owen's stuffed horse tightly. The thing was almost as big as she was and even after all this time still looked only vaguely like a horse. Dany had hoped it would age in her mind and eventually become instantly recognizable but clearly stuffed things didn't work like that.

It took him a moment. "Your brother?" No one could say he wasn't trying, in his mind he was doing marvellously, the look he gave the fussing baby was one of indulgence, not disgust. "Neither my brother nor my sister have been here."

"He was not well liked by the people here. I would advise you not to make the same mistakes he did, but it seems that in apologising in the first place you're already several steps ahead of him."

"I will do my best," His response was serious, her advice only reaffirming the course he had chosen in his mind. "I appreciate your advice."
