It hadn't really been a weird week until she went into the kitchen to cook dinner on Wednesday.  It was a little different from most weeks because most weeks she didn't get elected to serve on the island council and realize she was actually going to be warping young minds at the island school, but it hadn't been weird.

Now?  Now it was weird, ( Read more... )

"Who's here?" Tosh couldn't see anyone else in the room. "Or have you developed another personality?" Only partially a joke in this place unfortunately.

"I haven't," she admitted sadly, and turned around so Tosh could see Bert.

"Tosh, meet Bert. Bert, this is Tosh," she introduced them, and squeezed Bert.

"Bert says hi."

A farting hippo. Alright. Tosh had seen stranger things, though her eyebrows may have gone up and she may have also been giving Abby a bemused sort of look. "Bert. Good to meet you I think."

"Bert was mine at home. I guess the island decided I needed him here?" she suggested. "I'm not objecting, anyway."

"You should have some spaghetti. It's good."

"Bert probably won't start wishing he were somewhere else till there's no more spaghetti," Bran says, letting himself into the kitchen with the dogs at his heels. "Which will be in...as long as it takes me to eat it all. That smells delicious."

"Well, there's plenty," she chirps at Bran. "I cook to please all comers, including hungry teenage boys."

"And I don't think Bert will start wishing he's somewhere else till the island turns him into a giraffe or something," she decides, and squeezes Bert.

"See? He says he wants to stay a hippo."

"Of course he does," Bran says cheerfully, filling up a plate. "Who'd want to be a giraffe?" He sinks into a chair. "Glad to see you're all right."

"I bet giraffes want to be giraffes," she points out sagely. "Although that could be because they don't know about being anything else."

"Yeah, I'm okay. How are you and Will? I can see that your faithful shadows are fine...and no, I will not give you any cookies."

This last bit is addressed to Cafall, who has mastered the art of the mournful sigh.

"That isn't...is it?" Tim asked, walking in and picking up the hippo. He gave it a small squeeze and, sure enough, it was Bert. "Where'd he come from?"

Abby looked up from getting another cookie. For Bert, of course.

"Um...the fifth dimension?" she offered. "This place brings stuff, I told you that. Apparently Bert is something the island decided I need...which I am not going to argue with. Now the lab has a mascot again."

"And here I thought I was your mascot," Tim said with a grin. He squeezed Bert again, just because he could. "And the fifth dimension? I think you've been watching a little too much original Twilight Zone, Abs." Although, he wasn't sure he had any better suggestions about this place.

"Well, see, the problem with you being the lab mascot is that you would probably mind if you had to be in the lab with me all the time. You have other things you could do with your time, like writing books about the team," she pointed out. "Bert doesn't mind. He likes the lab."

She'd thrown the little comment about the books in, because after Tony told her that Tim had written that Deep Six book, she'd started reading it...and there were some odd similarities in it, too.
