It hadn't really been a weird week until she went into the kitchen to cook dinner on Wednesday. It was a little different from most weeks because most weeks she didn't get elected to serve on the island council and realize she was actually going to be warping young minds at the island school, but it hadn't been weird.
Now? Now it was weird, because she'd come into the kitchen to see Bert, sitting square in the middle of one of the tables, acting like he owned the place. She stood and stared at him for a few minutes, but then shook herself out of it. She still had to make dinner, and now she had a helper. She picked Bert up and squeezed him to hear the familiarly rude noise, then put him down.
"I think today is a spaghetti day, don't you, Bert?" she asked him. He didn't answer, but that was okay. He looked approving, and that was good. Bert wasn't much of a talker not counting the noise.
She made the spaghetti and sauce with fresh tomatoes, then sliced and toasted some of the bread. The salad was a little smaller than usual since something had trampled through the garden on Halloween and had damaged the plants, but it was still yummy. Bert liked cookies, so she made some sugar cookies quickly.
When it was all done, she sat down at the table with him and squeezed him. "Sometimes I really don't know what to think about this place, Bert. I'm glad you're here, though."
[Bert is a stuffed hippo with a spiked collar. He is about 24 inches long...and he farts when you squeeze him.]
