Ando had been settling in really quite well. He didn't have very many friends outside of the people he already knew, but when had he needed more than Hiro? Too many friends spread one's attention too thin and well, yeah. Despite Ando's eternal quest to be popular and well liked, he had at least one foot firmly rooted in the reality of what he could

Trance's eyes widened when she saw the sword. It wasn't really the same as the ones that she'd remembered her other self using, but it was odd enough to pique her interest. She wandered over slowly, hoping that the person holding the sword wasn't the mean type.

"Hello," she said softly, once she was within hearing distance. "I don't think we've met, yet." She held out her hand. "I'm Trance. Trance Gemini."

Ando's eyes opened at the sound of a voice and he smiled sadly at the source of it. "Masahashi, Ando Masahashi," he said, grateful for the distraction from the sword as he shifted it to one hand so that he could shake hers. "It is a pleasure to meet you."

"Are you new?" Trance asked curiously. She didn't remember seeing him around, much, but will all of the chaos, lately, that didn't mean much. "I'm one of the medical students over in the Compound."

"Not, really. I have been here for...two months almost now, but I spend a lot of time reading." He'd been working his way through Pride and Prejudice and find quickly that he didn't like literature of that era at all in the slightest. He kept plucking away at it just to say that he finished one of the great English classics in its original format.

Trance nodded. "The last few months have been...well, you were here for Halloween. That was the culmination of it. Up until then, we'd seen a lot of the people that were hallucinating in the clinic."

She sighed and shook her head. "Of course, now they're in there again for a completely different reason."

So many of them were injured.

Ando looked down at the sword and sighed. "I wish I could have done more to help, but I was pretty useless on Halloween." If only the sword had gotten there sooner or if only he would've gotten here with the gun he had when he was pretending to be security at Lindermann's.

"I didn't do much, either," Trance said. "Not until I got to New Atlantis. Then I helped out a bunch with the other doctors. My friends Claude and Spike had to rescue me from one of the vampires." She grimaced a little. "I'm afraid I'm not that good of a fighter. I've been training, but..."

She just didn't want to hurt people.

Ando nodded sympathetically. "Some of those things were too human to fight," he said quietly. "Are you all right? After the vampires I mean?"

"Oh, I'm fine. I got rescued and brought back to New Atlantis." Although it was sort of amusing to be rescued from a vampire by a vampire.

"You never know. A lot of people were hurt. I just had to make sure." He licked his lips and scratched his shoulder awkwardly. "Can I ask you something?"

Her brow furrowed and she nodded. "Of course you can."

"Why are you purple?" he asked, having never come across someone who was voluntarily purple in his life. He'd seen them in broadcasts of American sports events, but somehow he doubted this was quite the same.

"I'm not human," she returned easily. "Or at least I wasn't. I am now. Except for the purple skin. That came with me when I showed up." She was a bit surprised that it had taken this long for him to ask.

"Ah," Ando said as if that made perfect sense. Like Star Trek, his mind supplied, but he was kind enough not to say. "Well it is a very pretty shade of purple, if you do not mind me saying so."

Trance turned a slightly more vibrant shade of purple as she blushed. "Thank you. I was gold, for a little while. When there were wands on the island. But now I'm just purple again."

Ando smiled and canted his head curiously to one side. "Why were you gold?" he asked.
