It was Pam’s turn to take care of her.

Jim lazed about on the couch as she entertained Sam nearby. He knew he ought to get up and take a proper nap in the room - Pam wouldn’t care - he just didn’t feel like getting up. So the couch it was, and it wasn’t even that uncomfortable either ( Read more... )

"Hey Jim, hey Pam," Keith said, walking into the room. "'Allo, Sam-antha," he said, his voice significantly changed from his talking-to-adults voice.

Although, admittedly, it depended on the adult.

Pam looked up at Keith from her new position on the couch with a weak smile.

"Hi." Normally she'd be more talkative, but.. today she was worried. What if Samantha really was sick? They didn't really have anything to give her to help her..

Jim offered his own half grin to the older man. It took him a second to realize someone who might possibly be able to help actually just walked into the room.

"Hey, Keith?" he asked. "Does Sam look sick to you?"

There was no harm in asking. He had raised a kid, after all.

"Let's take a look," Keith said, crouching down to take a look at Sam, offering her a finger to play with while he did so. "What makes you think she's sick?"

Paranoid list of several minor symptoms in three, two...

"Oh, well.. She sounds congested and.. I think she sneezed," Pam explained, fidgeting nervously next to Jim. Now that she'd said it out loud to someone other than Jim, it sounded silly, but she still couldn't help feeling worried.

"We took her out a couple of days ago," he added. "And with how this island is, we were just trying to figure out if we ought to bring her to the clinic...you know. Uh. Early."

"Outside, on the nice warm island, where hardly anyone gets sick?" Keith asked, feeling her foreheard. "She hasn't been feverish?"

Pam could feel herself flush with embarrassment. "No, but-" She cut herself off abruptly, realizing she wasn't actually sure what it was she was going to say. She cleared her throat nervously and shrugged.

"She sounds congested, though.." As if that proved some imaginary point that she had.

"A little bit," he nodded in agreement. At least, Jim thought she did. As it was, congested or not, Sam was healthy enough to reach up and try to grab at Keith's finger with her own little hands, her eyes wide and curious.

Keith grinned at her and let her grab it. "It's probably just a little cold," Keith said. "She's not crying, which ... well, you probably don't need me to tell you that if something's the slightest bit wrong, they let you know at this age. Loudly and frequently."

Pam shifted slightly, nodding her head and feeling like an idiot.

"Yeah, she's.. actually been really good today," she replied.

"Which is probably why we were worried," he joked, biting back a grin. He looked down at her as she entertained herself by focusing on Keith's finger, her grip on it surprisingly good.

Keith laughed, just a bit, at that, and grinned at Jim. "Unusual, isn't it?" Then he offered Pam a slightly softer smile. "Don't worry about it. Paranoia is healthy in a parent. Let no one - especially that daughter of mine - tell you different."

Pam blushed even more, reaching up to tuck her bangs back behind her ear.

"Yeah. It's just.. I don't think I ever used to be this paranoid," she laughed.

"I think we're allowed to be," he mused. He felt better about the Sam thing already. "I mean, first kid. That automatically gives us a pass to panic at stuff, right?"

"Stuff, things, invisible dust mites," Keith confirmed, making silly little puppet shapes with his fingers for Sam to tug at. "Lifetime pass for all of the above."
