It had taken Lucy days to find everything she needed to make Susan and Jon a gift for their wedding. She'd borrowed needle and thread, found material she'd thought would work in the clothing chest along with ribbons she'd removed from some items. The flowers had been easiest, those she'd picked earlier that week and dried inside of her room. ( Read more... )

"What are you working on?" The girl seemed to be dilligently working away at a project of some kind. It reminded Stacy of things she'd done during rainy childhood days. Scraps of fabric from all sorts of occassions had been strewn across the floor, and her mother wouldn't let her use the needle because she might hurt herself.

They were still fond memories.

"Trying to make a gift for my sister. She's getting married on Saturday." The first star was done and stuffed, but she still had three to go. Shaking her head she looked up at the woman who'd come in and smiled, "I'm Lucy."

"I'm Stacy." It was easy to smile at Lucy. She even looked a little familiar, like a friend Stacy had when she was younger. But that was all a long time ago.

Leaning down a little, she took a better look. "Are you and your sister close?"

"We are here. We weren't at home as much but she's different here." Lucy put the star she was working on for a moment, "Do you have a sister?"

"I had brothers." Stacy sat down beside Lucy, even though it wasn't quite easy to do. She was careful of the fabric, not to damage it. "Three. But we were close, too."

"I have two brothers two, Peter and Edmund. Only Susan is here though, but she told me they used to be. Brothers can be such pains sometimes, can't they?" She missed her brothers terribly, and truly wished they were here.

Stacy nodded slowly. "They can be," she said. "But a lot of times? Brothers look out for their sisters. Even if they're your younger brothers. So it's sort of nice to have them around, don't you think?"

"I'm the youngest, they're all older. Except here Susan is much older, she was only 16 back home." Lucy was sewing very deliberately as she spoke. "We looked out for each other, mostly."

Stacy smiled warmly. "It's good that you can do that, for one another," she said. "Even younger siblings can take care of the older."

"Isn't that's what family is for?" Lucy asked sensibly?
