It had taken Lucy days to find everything she needed to make Susan and Jon a gift for their wedding. She'd borrowed needle and thread, found material she'd thought would work in the clothing chest along with ribbons she'd removed from some items. The flowers had been easiest, those she'd picked earlier that week and dried inside of her room. ( Read more... )

Seems like everyone 'round this place is sewin' cool stuff, an' sometimes it sorta makes me wish I had someone teachin' me how to do the same thing so's I can sew stuff too. Maybe I'll do that soon. Anyhow, today I'm runnnin' into the kitchen to get myself somethin' to drink 'fore goin' off to play s'more, when there's a girl round 'bout my age sewin' stars onto cloth. "Hey," I say, sittin' down 'cross from her. "Whatcha sewin'?"

"Trying to make a gift for my sister. She's getting married." Lucy explained, frowning more at the stars. "Do you want to help?"

"Oh, neato," I say, leanin' my elbows on the table an' peerin' at the crafts. "I haven't ever really sewed too much 'fore," I say, chewin' my bottom lip. "I don't wanna mess up your pretty gift."

"There's extra," Lucy offered, waving her hand at the bits of material on the table. "I'm not very good at it. Susan was always better at these things." The irony of her then being the one who was sewing a gift was not lost on her at all.

"Only person I ever did know that sewed was Auntie," I say, pickin' up one of the stars an' lookin' at it, "and I didn't like her. Cal did too, but she was too busy shooin' me outta the way to teach me nuthin' 'bout it." I turn the fabric 'round in my hands. "Wanna show me how? I'll try not to mess it up." I'd hate to mess up a weddin' gift.

"I learned, but I never really paid attention," Lucy wrinkled her nose as she continued. "I'd rather be outside exploring." This Island still had so much more to explore.

"It's easy, kind of. You just have to follow the lines and try to not stick your fingers." That could be the hard part.

"Okay," I say, pickin' up another star, an' some thread, an' a needle thinger.

I can do this! I can do anythin', Atticus always told me.

"You like explorin'?" I ask while tryin' to thread the needle. "So do I. There's a lot of great stuff to explore." I pause, 'memberin' that I never did introduce myself. "My name's Scout. What's yours?"

"I'm Lucy," She smiled as she looked up. "I've only been here a little while, but I do. We used to go everywhere in Narnia. Have you explored much here? I hear there are dinosaurs!"

"I've been here for a year," I say with a nod. I think a year's somethin' like forever. "I never heard of Narnia," I say. "Where's that at?" She sounds like the other people I met here from other countries, from England an' stuff. Maybe Narnia's a city over there. "I've explored some, but it's hard 'cos of the grown-ups." I frown.

"Narnia is in a different world. I'm from England, but I lived in Narnia for years too. It was wonderful." At the mention of grown-ups Lucy frowned too. "My sister is like that. We could wait til no one is watching."

"A different world?" My eyes are a little wide at that, but then 'gain, I met aliens an' people from the future, here, so a different world ain't really all that different. "I bet the grown ups will all get distracted at somethin'," I say, noddin'. "They do that sometimes, even though they say how they're always payin' attention to make sure we don't get in no trouble. They sure can't be watchin' twenty-four hours a day."

"It was wonderful. It had Animals," the capitalization was important, "and I was a queen there. We all were kings and queens, Susan and Peter and Edmund too."

What Scout was saying made sense. "My sister's getting married tomorrow. They do things like that sometimes. Maybe next time it happens we can go!"

"Kings an' queens?" My eyes get even bigger an' I think I'm starin'. "That's really amazin', Lucy," I say. "I didn't know anyone who ever was a king or queen 'fore." Closest we got back in Maycomb was seein' the governor's kids or summat when they were passin' through town/

I clap my hands at her great idea. "That sounds good," I say, "'cos then everyone'll be payin' attention to that 'stead o' makin' sure we're all where we're s'posed to be."

"Two sons of Adam and two daughters of Eve. Aslan defeated the white witch and we reigned there for almost ten years. I can't go back anymore though. I'm too old now." It made her sad, but this was a new friend and she was determined to not be sad.

"Maybe after the wedding? We can go to the party and then go explore."

I screw up my face, tryin' to work the math. She don't look much too old, not old 'nough to have been livin' somewhere for ten years an' not be practically ancient by now. Maybe she's one of those people who looks young but is really actually old. I dunno. People come from strange things here.

"Oooh, that's a good plan," I say. "Your sister will be off with her new husband celebratin' an' stuff." Or whatever people do when they're married. I didn't really know, since I don't remember my mom.

The math had never concerned Lucy. Narnia was it's own rule unto itself, and she accepted that, not really thinking that others might not. "Someone wrote books about us!" That thrilled her though she had yet to find them.

"Do you want to come to the wedding? There will be lots of food. I'm helping to make the cake."
