The commemoration of birthdays was always a very welcome event and did serve to remind Jane of the sanctity of life and how each person's was quite precious. With that in mind, she baked and cooked this morning with a slight different purpose, creating muffins with a lemon glaze akin to sugaring on top, intended for all the people who normally ( Read more... )

Johnny had been sleeping in whatever convenient corner he could find (he'd refused to stay in the "new resident crash room" because he thought the name was stupid) and tended to be even grumpier than usual in the morning. Last night he'd slept on the rec room couch, and today his back and neck were killing him.

He slouched into the kitchen for his morning dose of caffeine, and saw what appeared to be a pregnant escapee from a Jane Austen novel making breakfast. The food smelled good, though. He grunted by way of greeting and headed straight for the coffee.

Jane regarded him with a bemused, yet pleased smile. "Have you come in search of food, perhaps?" she suggested with a curious and innocent expression upon her face.

"Dunno," Johnny said indifferently. He gave her a onceover out of the corner of his eye as he poured out the coffee. The sort of girl you took home to mother. Except Johnny hated his mother.

"You make all this yourself?" he asked.

Jane regarded him curiously, if not a bit skittish and shy. "I did, yes," she agreed, with a bow of her head. "I have been very resourceful and efficient."

"What for?" Johnny asked.

"Because I have volunteered for such a task and it is therefore my duty," Jane said, as though there could not possibly be any other reason.

"Whatever floats your boat, love."

He sat down at the table and looked at all the food. Quite a spread there. The girl must be a sucker for punishment. "What's with the get-up?" he asked, nodding at her 19th-century clothes. "Having a fancy dress party after breakfast?"

Jane stared down at her dress and smoothed a hand over the bump the baby created. "Get up?" she inquired, utterly lost. "I am not aware of what you mean by such words."

"I mean your outfit, love," Johnny said, leaning his chin in his hand. "What are you all dressed up for?"

She continued to move her hands over the muslin material, eyes clouded with concern. "It is what I wear each day. Is there, perhaps, something amiss with it?"

"Well, most of the time people don't come to breakfast dressed like an extra from Pride and Prejudice, but if that's what you do for fun, don't let me stop you."

Johnny looked at the muffins, which all had a letter on them. How ever so adorable. He picked one that had an S on it and started eating it. (Why S? Why not?)

Jane was staring at the man curiously. "I am from 1812," she spoke, very quietly. "It is my home and I do not know what an extra is?"

"1812," Johnny repeated blankly. "Well, there's a girl from another planet and a bloke with a giant robot here too, so I suppose I shouldn't be too surprised. This is good," he added generously, gesturing with the muffin. He had the feeling it had been intended for someone else, but he didn't care.

"Thank you," she said, though still very perplexed and she set about making another muffin to replace the one that the man had eaten.
