There had been several things lacking in the upbringing that Augustus Knickel had recieved from his grandfather, the Mayor. Cicero had approved of the reading of Classics, periods of quiet contemplation and soccer. What had been lacking was regular mealtimes, television and, often, the wearing of underwear. Cicero had been fond of believing things out of existence.
Cicero Knickel had not believed in laundry.
It was, Gus decided, too hot. Gus had grown up on Solomon Gundy, where it had never been warm enough, really, where he'd shivered. On the island, Hamlet lolled in the shade while Gus glanced around and slipped out of shorts and shirts. No underwear.
"Cicero would have been proud," he told the pig, as he slid into the cold water of the waterfall pool.
"Jesus."
