There were only a select handful of scenes from American Psycho that really appealed to Brian. Arguably, there were other ways to make the afternoon go by but he couldn't see anything wrong with taking a break and watching someone else kill people was the next best thing to getting to kill people himself ( Read more... )

Oh my God what is this movie? The guy on the couch looks kind of disappointed which isn't the first reaction that Kate would have had. She finds herself frozen, watching the last few minutes seemingly against her will and still has a pretty freaked out expression on her face when the guy on the couch finally gets up.

Brian looked over at the girl and shrugged. He wasn't going to pretend to be offended by the movie or shocked. It was a little late for that but he could look unimpressed. That wasn't too unusual. "Yeah, it's weird but Bale's a good actor."

"Yeah, he is," Kate agrees, although she kind of prefers Little Women. "I, uh, I met him once...well sort of. I went to New York for a casting thing and he was there and..." she trails off, thinking this guy really didn't give a shit. "Anyway, hi. I'm Kate."

Brian didn't really give a shit about a lot of things but he was vaguely curious about Christian Bale. He was pretty good at pretending to be absolutely insane. He offered her his hand and grinned. "Hi. I'm Brian. That sounds pretty cool. Are you an actress?"

The guy has this vaguely creepy thing going on but he looks a lot more normal when he smiles. And just a little bit like Mark Anthony. Kate's takes his hand and offers a small smile. "Yeah, actually. Uh, mostly stage stuff but I went down for an audition for A Midsummer Night's Dream and he was there. Actually we have a stage here for plays and things. What about yourself?"

"Well, this is my eighth day here. I used to be a doctor but my focus was in prosthetics which isn't going to be very handy here." Brian continued smiling as Kate would know the pun was intentional.

"I'm still trying to find my way around. I guess I should have waited a few months before watching any scary movies. That was probably a bad decision." He did his best to look suitably apologetic which was easy to do as long as he didn't have to say he was sorry.

Kate raises her eyes at the joke and gives him a smile. "Oh, I think real life around here is usually just as messed up as anything in a horror movie. Take your pick. Dinosaurs, gender-swapping, murder..."

Brian raised an eyebrow. This was new. No one had mentioned anyone being killed to him yet. "I heard about the dinosaurs. I think I ate some of one yesterday, actually, but gender-swapping and murder?"

"It's an island thing," Kate explains, being very helpful. "Every few months everyone wakes up and something's wrong. Like you'll wake up in someone else's body, or wake up as a child, or a different gender, or sometimes it's holiday specific. Oh, and someone was murdered just a while ago. It was pretty horrible as the guy killed himself after." Kate waits a moment for that to sink in before realizing something. "Wait. You ate a dinosaur?"

Brian laughed. "Well, it tasted more like chicken than boar so I'm guessing that's what it was."

He considered the whole murder-suicide scenario, frowning a little and hoping that Dexter hadn't done anything like that back home. He didn't think so. It's not like he meant that much to his brother if he meant anything at all. ...He needed to stop thinking about that.

"How long have you been here, Kate?"

Kate gives him a very, very dubious stare. "But where did you get the dinosaur meat? Aren't they hard to kill?" Kate had thought she was kind of bad-ass for touching one. Apparently she was wrong.

"Uh, God I guess almost five months? What about you?"

"People go hunting them," Brian explained. "Sometimes there's meat leftover in the kitchen." Maybe someone had been saving it for a special occasion. Oops. "Eight days. I guess I'm getting used to the place. I'm staying in a cave though which... isn't all that great."

Oh, yeah he said that. Kate hadn't listened very well as she was trying to decide if he was creepy. "Oh. Huh. Maybe I ate it thinking it was...well actually I don't really question the meat in the kitchen," Kate pauses, trying to remember the last meat products she ate out of there. "Well, if you prefer, I know someone who can build huts and things for living outside. Actually I know two people who do that."

"People are here seem to cook decently," Brian agreed. He considered her offer thoughtfully, frowning a little. "I don't want to bother anyone with that. I can figure something out if the cave winds up being a mistake."

"Well, if you change your mind I don't think it would be a bother. They've built tons of them already and do more all the time," Kate says, wondering if maybe it is sort of a pain and Duck just won't say so.

"I'll keep that in mind," Brian assured her. He wondered why anyone would want to build him a hut but maybe that wouldn't be the worst idea. "Thanks."
