There were only a select handful of scenes from American Psycho that really appealed to Brian. Arguably, there were other ways to make the afternoon go by but he couldn't see anything wrong with taking a break and watching someone else kill people was the next best thing to getting to kill people himself ( Read more... )

All in all, the movie hadn't been too bad as movies go, right up until the chainsaw scene, at which point I left my perch in the doorway and scurried down the hall to the kitchen like a frightened rabbit. Shameful, I know, and even worse, I've spent the better part of an hour convincing myself it was all due to a sudden craving for tea.

Now I'm watching the water, waiting for it to boil. It's taking forever, and I can't help but think that if only it could borrow some of my inner turmoil, it'd go a lot faster. I guess I'll have to settle for cranking up the burner.

After having no luck with the newspapers on the bookshelf and one short game of pool, Brian wandered towards the kitchen for lack of anywhere else to go. He considered the boiling water, frowning a little and eyeing the empty pot of coffee before shrugging. He was more interested in his brother than what he was going to have to drink anyway. "Hello, Dexter."

I don't jump at his voice, but it's a near thing. A second later I do jump, because the water's finally boiling, small bursts that send tiny splashes onto my hand.

"Hey," I say, wiping my hand off on my pants. "You want some tea?"

Brian didn't normally worry about people but he felt a brief flicker of concern for Dexter's fingers. He also would have loved to know what was weighing so heavily on the other killer's mind. "Yeah, that would be great."

"Great, hang on a sec." I pull two mugs down and grab a strainer, carefully pouring the bouring water over some leaves until both mugs are full. "Be better if I knew what I was doing," I confess with a short, manufactured laugh, and bypass the sugar. "I'm guessing you can't stomach too much sweet?"

"You'd be surprised," Brian said wryly before sitting down at the table. "What about you?"

I snag the sugar on my way to the table just in case. We're colleagues now, and I should show a little respect. "Not in tea. Actually, I'm not sure I even like hot tea. Welcome to my experiment."

"You'd have to try very hard to mess up boiled water," Brian replied before putting a generous portion of sugar in the tea. It would all sink to the bottom of the cup anyway but it would possibly make the drink taste better. "And at least you've found something to experiment on."

Serial killer banter is an indulgence long denied - might as well try my hand at it. "Getting itchy fingers, are we?"

"You could say that. I've found some ways to amuse myself. I even helped someone begin his journey towards enlightenment." Or death. Brian was hoping for death.

"Know the way, do you?" Of course he does, as do I. It's usually to be found at the end of a shiny knife. But since he can't use those here..."Do tell."

"I know lots of ways," Brian agreed before leaning back in his chair. "To make a long story short, this foreign pirate kept asking me about the magic of records so I told him if he stayed on top of the mountain for four days he'd learn how." This wasn't the greatest story ever told but if the pirate was still up on the mountain, it was definitely fucking hilarious.

Well, that's enough to earn him an appreciative smile. Wistfully I hope that if the pirate's somewhere starving to death, he'll be kind enough to let me help him along.

"Nice. What day are we on?"

Brian took a moment to consider. "Day five. Assuming he actually followed through or knew what a mountain was." Whatever happened to First-Mate Fucktard didn't matter to him although the idea of killing someone no matter how indirectly made him feel surprisingly good about himself. If things ever got too bad, he could always think to himself that at least he wasn't as dim-witted as Pirate Wossname.

"Birds ought to let us know whether he made it to the top or not," I muse, idly sipping at my tea. It feels strangely normal to be sitting here, discussing my favorite pasttimes in perfect honesty. Strange and comforting. "Or pterodactyls as the case may be."

Brian sipped at his tea too and shrugged. "If that's the case, they're going to be disappointed. There's not much meat on him. But I'm sure some well-meaning person will set him straight. Maybe they'll even teach him some basic rules of grammar."
