It was in the spirit of missing home that Jane did sit down at a table in the strange room in which she had appeared. She had neither a quill, nor any parchment -- and hardly wax to seal a letter -- but she felt as though she must send something home, even if all the words were composed in her mind.

Dear Mary, she would have written, for Mary ( Read more... )

Stu brought the L'Amour novel back to the shelf in hopes of finding the next in the series. Chris had mentioned it was crowded in the compound, and sure enough, you couldn't swing a cat without gettin' fur on somebody. He smiled as he sauntered toward the shelves, nodding a little at the young woman seated at the table.

"Ma'am," he said by way of greeting.

Jane was startled by the voice and rose to her feet gracefully, her white dress trailing as she did. She curtsied. "Sir," she greeted, her head cast downwards. "Hello."

Stu nodded again, his posture tighting up a little in the presence of such a lady.

"Howdy," he said as he fidgeted with the book, "Pleased to meetcha, I'm Stu."

It didn't seem right to offer to shake hands, so he was at a loss for what to do but stand there like he'd been called up to the teacher's desk.

Jane had never heard anyone speak with such inflections before in her entire life. "Miss Jane Bennet," she introduced herself, curiousity filling her quite completely. "From Hertfordshire. And where are you from? The North, perhaps?" Even though she had never heard anyone speak like that from the North.

"Good morning, Jane," Elizabeth said, greeting her. She found that if she was unaware of where Jane was, the Rec Room was usually a good place to check. Upon glancing at Jane, she noticed that she did not appear as contented as usual. "Are you all right?" she asked, with concern. Her sister was still in the adjusting process, which was a hard time for anyone, and probably especially so for someone as delicate as Jane.

Jane's gaze tipped upwards at Lizzy's voice and she smiled serenely. "I was just thinking of letters, and home," she replied, smiling at her sister. "I was wishing for parchment and something to write with. Of course, there would hardly be a chance it would find its' way back, now is there?"

"Perhaps not," Elizabeth frowned, "but if it would help ease your mind to write letters, I would be more than happy to search for parchment as well as a writing utensil."

Jane met Elizabeth's gaze and she nodded, just the once, feeling quite settled. Yes, writing them would do. "That would be most helpful, Lizzy," she expressed her gratitude in her tone. "You seem far more settled. Has something perhaps gone right?"

It is likely a waste of time but I am here so I will check again. I have still more of the books about Hogwarts school to read (and I need to speak with Sirius or Severus about that. Sirius did say they were inaccurate...) but I continue to seek a copy of the Bible or To Kill a Mockingbird. The Bible that was handed to me changed in my hands so I think I'll neither be finding one nor reading it any time soon. I continue to check.

There is a young lady I've not seen before at the table. Her clothing is different from most others here--she must be new, obviously. I'm simply not sure what she's doing exactly. I have some idea, though I do not think she's slaying dragons in her head. Speaking to someone or thinking of those left behind, perhaps.

I hear a sigh and stop on my way to the bookshelves.

"Is something the matter, my lady?" I ask quietly. I think she knew I was here though perhaps not. "Please excuse me, I don't wish to disturb you."

Jane turned and rose to her feet, curtsying to maintain propriety. "I am simply thinking of people that are not here," she confessed, her expression almost impassive. "And writing letters that cannot be sent home."

She must be very new here for her to greet me like that. I bow formally in response.

"I find myself doing both of those things, my lady." It solves nothing but I do it anyway.

"Please excuse me, my name is Faramir and I am from the land of Gondor in Middle earth. I have been here so long that I have forgotten my manners. I should have introduced myself from the first or not intruded in the first place. I would leave you to your musings if you prefer it."

She does not know me--why should she speak to me? I have become so used to speaking with anyone I meet that I did not think.

Jane's brow furrowed a small amount, barely visible and that was the extent of her shown distress. "Middle Earth? I apologise, but I have never heard of the land. Is it perhaps, in the East?" Jane did not like confusion. She far preferred to be positive and knowledgeable of things.

She was here again- not that John had any objection in principle to the presence of Jane Bennet pretty much anywhere he might happen to be.

He waited a few moments after she seemed to have finished with what she was doing before making his presence known. "Good morning, Miss Bennet."

Jane smiled calmly at the familiar voice, a sparkle in her eyes at someone she knew. "Lord Marbury," she greeted, rising to her feet to curtsy. "And how are you this fine day?"

"All the better for having seen you," replied John, with a bow and a smile. He'd been meaning to check the bookshelf, but it probably had not yet given up its latest game, and Miss Bennet was immeasurably more interesting even if it had.

Jane could not help but smile sunnily at his kind words. "Were you in search of something, Lord Marbury?" she inquired. "Perhaps I might help?"
