It was in the spirit of missing home that Jane did sit down at a table in the strange room in which she had appeared. She had neither a quill, nor any parchment -- and hardly wax to seal a letter -- but she felt as though she must send something home, even if all the words were composed in her mind.

Dear Mary, she would have written, for Mary ( Read more... )

"Good morning, Jane," Elizabeth said, greeting her. She found that if she was unaware of where Jane was, the Rec Room was usually a good place to check. Upon glancing at Jane, she noticed that she did not appear as contented as usual. "Are you all right?" she asked, with concern. Her sister was still in the adjusting process, which was a hard time for anyone, and probably especially so for someone as delicate as Jane.

Jane's gaze tipped upwards at Lizzy's voice and she smiled serenely. "I was just thinking of letters, and home," she replied, smiling at her sister. "I was wishing for parchment and something to write with. Of course, there would hardly be a chance it would find its' way back, now is there?"

"Perhaps not," Elizabeth frowned, "but if it would help ease your mind to write letters, I would be more than happy to search for parchment as well as a writing utensil."

Jane met Elizabeth's gaze and she nodded, just the once, feeling quite settled. Yes, writing them would do. "That would be most helpful, Lizzy," she expressed her gratitude in her tone. "You seem far more settled. Has something perhaps gone right?"

"Yes," Elizabeth said, smiling. She could hardly believe that she hadn't already told Jane. "Mr. Ford returned, just as you said he would."

Jane brightened at the good news. "Lizzy, that's wonderful!" she remarked, reaching over to take her sister's hand, her countenance simply brighter. "Oh, I am so happy for you," she remarked, utterly at a loss. Her emotions brimmed inside, but did not escape.

"Yes, I was very pleased," Elizabeth said, unable to contain her happiness. "And he kissed me!" she squealed. She wondered what Jane would think of it, realizing that Jane might think it improper.

Jane's eyes widened and her mouth parted in the shock of it. But she was not much past shocked. If Lizzy did care deeply for Mr. Ford, then Jane could find no harm in stolen affections. "Did you enjoy it?" was all she really wanted to know.

"Yes," Elizabeth giggled, "and then he apologized for kissing me, but I told him it was quite all right. Oh, I sound so silly."

Jane brightened and she smiled widely, so pleased with her sister's happiness, clasping her hand a little tighter. "Oh, Lizzy, that's marvelous!" she said, with no trace of jealousy or unhappiness. Elizabeth was happy and she had a man she truly cared for and that made things truly good and well. "I would very much like to meet him, you know," she reminded, an expectant look on her face.

"And I would very much like you to. It shall most certainly happen," she assured Jane. "How have you been, though?" Obviously, Jane still missed home. "I trust that everyone on the island has been nice to you?"

"Oh, they have been far more than kind," Jane assured, from the very depths of her heart. "I have only met one impolite man, and even then, I was in his way and he had cause." She smiled a closed-lipped smile that was genuine nonetheless. "I found myself lost at the beach and I took in the ocean by chance. It's absolutely breathtaking," she admitted.

"Yes, it is," Elizabeth smiled. "It's one of my favorite parts of the island. There's also a very beautiful waterfall, deeper into the woods," she said. "Really, this place is quite lovely." Just not home. She didn't add that last part.

"The climate is quite warmer," she commented, "which is so refreshing not to have to bundle up quite so much every time one sets foot out the door." She pictured a very beautiful waterfall and found she longed to see it, even if she was not terribly fond of walking.

She turned her attention back to things of man and not nature. "Tell me more about Mr. Ford," Jane encouraged, eyes bright and beaming.

Jane always was fond of gossip. "Well, I wouldn't know where to start," Elizabeth admitted. "I find him terribly handsome. He is also fairly tall, and always seems to be wearing his military uniform. Oh, and he is very polite and cautious, except for that he enjoys blowing things up," Elizabeth laughed. "It is very hard to describe, but that was what he did back home, and I think he misses it."

"Lizzy!" Jane remarked, almost in eager shock. "A military man, oh, whatever would Mama say?" In fact, Jane imagined their mother would be quite pleased. "Violence? Surely not towards other people, though?"
