GOOD: I'm playing with the International Youth Wind Orchestra this week at the WASBE conference held at CCM this year. We are playing great standard wind band rep, working with 3 of the most respected wind conductors alive, and having our rehearsals and performance recorded for a DVD. After our first full day of rehearsals today, while packing instruments up, I overheard people NOT complaining about conductors, NOT complaining about other people's playing, NOT complaining about having to be there, but talking positively about the day! This is a huge change from CCM ensembles, where if you listen to people at any given time, they will be talking about someone/a section "sucking," a CONDUCTOR "being horrible," or calling their obligation to rehearse a "waste of time." I know this attitude can't only exist at CCM; I'm sure it's the universal attitude in the universal professional music world. How cynical. I may be a cynic at times, but I feel like I had one of the most optimistic outlooks on CCM -- my complaints were always about other people's attitudes (esp. towards academics). I enjoyed playing in ensembles. I didn't think anyone "sucked." I liked the conductors. Was I too lenient on people? Or was everyone else just a dick? I went to a party on the fourth, and even OUT OF SCHOOL some people started a typical negative conversation. Seriously guys? OK, before I'm labeled a hypocrite, I'll stop complaining. :op Back to my original intent: after one very long day of rehearsal, I'm glad to be playing with talented and positive people from around the world, especially since I don't know when I'll play with an ensemble next!

BAD: Ok, not really that bad, but funny, I guess. As long as I actually do get a job soon. It's funny filling out applications for retail jobs (which is what I'm hoping for at this point - even though no one seems to actually be hiring). I have had 3 steady-paycheck jobs in my life: Carvel, and 2 TA positions. I guess I can't explain why this is funny to me, but I'm hoping someone will care that I have a masters degree... "Well, I graded papers for the past year, so I guess I can sell clothes."
