EMERGENCY

I fear that worms are extinct.

We all remember those childhood days walking to school in the rain, being careful not to step on (or deliberately squishing) the worms all over the sidewalk. We all remember that kid in elementary school who would eat worms for a nickel. Well, I fear those days may be past and our progeny will never have those delightful worm experiences.

It has rained a lot here on two days in the past week, and neither time did I see any worms on the sidewalks; I have had similar reports from many others. I was always told that worms crawled up out of the ground and onto the sidewalks so that they wouldn't drown in the soaked dirt. Now, I see two possibilities here: the worms had already all died off sometime during the summer, or they somehow got dumb about rain (perhaps they forgot how to deal with rain during the pseudo-drought that happened this summer?) and just stayed in the ground and drowned. Either way, all the worms are now all resting six feet under, so to speak.

This is certainly a tragedy of the greatest magnitude. May all our thoughts and prayers go out to the poor deceased host of wormkind.
