Optimism, and other things

Jan 24, 2007 22:29

My kind of optimism is actually a cold, hard realism. It's the knowledge that nothing ever is quite as good as you hope it might be, which means that anticipation is always the best part of anything. And knowing that, how can you not indulge wholeheartedly in anticipating things ( Read more... )

Eee! Icon! (Hello, I'm Richard.)

I might be setting my ideals too high, but that's through observing my male relatives -- not by swooning over fictional crushes.

Also, I'm so very excited for the new Persuasion adaption!

Eee! Icon snap!

How lovely that you have such splendid male relatives. And they're surely real, which is a definite plus point in letting them set the bar for your ideals.

I'm excited about Persuasion too! I love the version with Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds, but it will be fun to see what the new adaptation does with it.

Hee!

They're quite real, yes. Er, at least I think they are. What if I'm not real either? *ponders*

Yes, exactly! I mean, it's my favourite Austen. :-D

The even sillier thing about that article is that is' basically telling women to settle. I'd rather be alone than be so sad as to have a relationship that is just "making do" with some guy I stumbled upon. And I think most women are perfectly aware that their fictional crushes are just that.

Pft, it can almost be equated to telling activists to just stop working dreaming about and working toward a better society, because they're just going to be bitter and disappointed. Somebody's got to start the change :D

I mean, we can't very well hope for an alien in a TARDIS, but we can damn well hold out for a guy with a sense of adventure and humor!

Yes! To everything. :) The article seemed to think that life was a quest to find a mate, and people who weren't focusing all their efforts on such a task were failing. It was written by a woman - no doubt one who was not entirely satisfied in her own choice of partner, but trying to convince herself otherwise. ;)

It can almost be equated to telling activists to just stop dreaming about and working toward a better society, because they're just going to be bitter and disappointed. Somebody's got to start the changeHee, this reminds me of some of the old men of seventeen or thereabouts who come along to the youth club I help at. They are wise in that world-weary way only teenagers can be, and see what the poor, deluded rest of us cannot - to hope is hopeless. :) Protecting yourself from disappointment by always expecting the worst possible outcome is not only a miserable way to go through life, but a pathetic excuse to not bother. Hee. For the record, I do like my youth club. I think I have more hope for them than they do for ( ... )

Whatever you do, I really hope you don't scrap the post even if your theories are proved wrong. Who knows, we may need that bit of optimism more than ever at that time?

The balcony backdrop is hilarious in its unrealness. I was really scared there for a moment when Dick threw out the polaroid. It looked dangerously close to going straight through. I like your idea of the prehistoric landscape. I'd also suggest a lunar landscape, and since I'm currently obsessed with Rome (the series, not the city) perhaps one of the Roman battles against the Gauls? I think Logan would appreciate both the bloodshed and the the pretty colors! =)

As soon as I mentioned the "balcony view" my sister immediately said "So FAKE!!" before I even managed to quote you. She thought your ideas for improvement were very amusing. :)

Now how come there are never similarly condescending articles geared towards men, in which they are hectored for crushing on fashion models and pr0n stars, and told their unrealistic, self-deluding ideals will cause them sad, lonely disappointment and the discontinuation of the species unless and until they leave aside their hopeless fantasies and face the truth?

I mean, really. Sheesh.

The balcony view is just...why? They'd have been so much better off with a big window. And blinds. :) But maybe I'm misjudging the whole thing...perhaps it's a plot point! Perhaps later on in the season it will turn out Logan has been secretly hiding something behind his fake backdrop. Perhaps it is dinsoaurs!

And yes, a big amen to your second point!

I'm so glad you stopped in too! Coming home from work to find all your lovely comments has brightened my day more than you can begin to imagine. I'm so glad to have made you smile, because you've certainly done the same for me. I'm on my way out this minute, but I will hopefully get round to replying to everything else before very long!

{{hugs you}}

Hey, you! Seriously, I was beginning to think I was the only person to actually like this week's episode. I mean, was it stellar and on par with the best of VM eps? No, but it was enjoyable and Mac does indeed make all episodes better simply with her presence. As does passionate Logan/Veronica kissing.

That's all I have to say for now, except HIHIHIHIHIHIHIHI!

HIHIHIHIHIHI back! This week's episode gave me something to look forward to all day on Wednesday, and I wasn't in any way disappointed. It was fun, and Mac was adorable, and I always love an infiltration storyline. And hee, if Veronica and Logan want to take the unbearable amount of pain in the future over the small amount now, that's absolutely fine with me. I like now. :)

I read people's criticisms and I think a lot of them are valid. I don't feel I'm still watching the same show it was when I first came across it. But I do feel like I still recognise the characters, albeit inhabiting a slightly different world. But then, starting college is like that anyway.
