My kind of optimism is actually a cold, hard realism. It's the knowledge that nothing ever is quite as good as you hope it might be, which means that anticipation is always the best part of anything. And knowing that, how can you not indulge wholeheartedly in anticipating things

I might be setting my ideals too high, but that's through observing my male relatives -- not by swooning over fictional crushes.
Also, I'm so very excited for the new Persuasion adaption!

How lovely that you have such splendid male relatives. And they're surely real, which is a definite plus point in letting them set the bar for your ideals.
I'm excited about Persuasion too! I love the version with Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds, but it will be fun to see what the new adaptation does with it.

They're quite real, yes. Er, at least I think they are. What if I'm not real either? *ponders*
Yes, exactly! I mean, it's my favourite Austen. :-D

Pft, it can almost be equated to telling activists to just stop working dreaming about and working toward a better society, because they're just going to be bitter and disappointed. Somebody's got to start the change :D
I mean, we can't very well hope for an alien in a TARDIS, but we can damn well hold out for a guy with a sense of adventure and humor!

Somebody's got to start the changeHee, this reminds me of some of the old men of seventeen or thereabouts who come along to the youth club I help at. They are wise in that world-weary way only teenagers can be, and see what the poor, deluded rest of us cannot - to hope is hopeless. :) Protecting yourself from disappointment by always expecting the worst possible outcome is not only a miserable way to go through life, but a pathetic excuse to not bother. Hee. For the record, I do like my youth club. I think I have more hope for them than they do for ( ... )

The balcony backdrop is hilarious in its unrealness. I was really scared there for a moment when Dick threw out the polaroid. It looked dangerously close to going straight through. I like your idea of the prehistoric landscape. I'd also suggest a lunar landscape, and since I'm currently obsessed with Rome (the series, not the city) perhaps one of the Roman battles against the Gauls? I think Logan would appreciate both the bloodshed and the the pretty colors! =)

Now how come there are never similarly condescending articles geared towards men, in which they are hectored for crushing on fashion models and pr0n stars, and told their unrealistic, self-deluding ideals will cause them sad, lonely disappointment and the discontinuation of the species unless and until they leave aside their hopeless fantasies and face the truth?
I mean, really. Sheesh.

I read people's criticisms and I think a lot of them are valid. I don't feel I'm still watching the same show it was when I first came across it. But I do feel like I still recognise the characters, albeit inhabiting a slightly different world. But then, starting college is like that anyway.
