THE LAST WORDS MEME
(

Locked in a cell-like box, vents present like air holes for captured bugs. But no food.
No water.
It was a miracle he could survive this long... Rather, it was due to his status as Ultimate Life form that had kept him alive this long... Being genetically created to survive... And every second he wished he could just die.
He couldn't feel anything anymore, curled up on the floor of the box. If anyone noticed he was gone, he was certain they'd have found him by now. But...
That's the way things were. ]

Shadow could probably hear the rush toward the cell-like box as the blue hedgehog had sped toward, winds behind him picking up and also pushing him forward, making him that much faster.
But it may have already been too late.]
Shadow!

When he heard the voice call his name, he was certain he was just imagining things.
After all, it had been months. An impossibly long time. He stared at the floor, eyes blank, waiting. ]
Reply
He didn't want to think about it.]
Shadow, I know you're in there! Say something!
Reply
Something.
[ A joke. Sonic had taught him to, after all. Whether it was cynical or not, Shadow did have the ability to make light of a situation... though often times when he did, it was not the best time. This was one of those scenarios. ]
Reply
This... This isn't funny, Shadow! Don't... don't go anywhere!
[Don't go anywhere? It seemed like such an inane thing to say, yet Sonic had meant it in the way it had come out. Don't go. As if somehow Sonic could defy all the laws of nature and tell it to stop and spare his friend.]
... I'm gonna help you. I have to, and I will! I...
[No, not now, he couldn't falter now. He thought he was giving him a promise, and every promise Sonic made, he intended to keep. Yet this time... No matter how many or how pure his good intentions were, they were simply that. Intangible intentions.]

Don't waste your time. My past is catching up with me, that's all.
[Shadow had finally cracked the mystery of the box; but he was so weak that there was no way he'd ever be able to open it. He thought about telling Sonic what it was, but what would that do? Fill the other with false hope? Set his friend free only to watch him die?
Even Shadow wasn't that cruel.]

[The words were coming out fast, anger overtaking the rising fear that Sonic had been rendered utterly useless and helpless. When his friend needed his help the most, there was nothing he could do. Absolutely nothing. He had no idea about the box, how Shadow ended up in it, who put him in there. The only thing Sonic knew was that he had to get him out of it.
He could hear the shuffling, and it was a disturbing, unsettling sound. Sonic moved closer to the box where the vents were, where he saw what he could of Shadow.]
... You better tell me what happened. What are you talking about, this whole thing about your past?

[His voice is calm, despite how hoarse and quiet it is. There's a hint to it; like he's smiling. Shadow had no doubt resigned himself to the fate he had now.
And this is how the world ends.
And this is how the world ends.
And this is how the world ends. ]

[Sonic pounded his fist against the metal, frustrated, upset, and again terrified of the idea that... Sonic couldn't even think of the word. It should have been impossible, didn't they already hint at it that it had been impossible for him to...
A gloved hand pulled at the vent, trying to wrench it free, pull it out of its socket, Sonic pulled at it with all of his strength, but it remained there, unmoving.
But he couldn't give up. Without warning, Sonic kicked and punched the box, then resorted to spinning into it at high speed, using Homing Attacks, anything in his arsenal he could to break or even crack the box open. But there it had been, unmoving.
Eventually Sonic stopped, catching his breath, his hands red and bleeding from his futile attempts. Not even his sharpened spines at so many miles an hour could dent or scratch the box.
He couldn't give up. Shadow couldn't either. It wasn't right, Shadow never gave up or in, why now, and why like this...]

Chaos Control...
[He spoke again, this time as a suggestion, even though he knew it was futile... at least, for how much longer he'd live.]
The box is impregnable to Chaos attacks... From the inside... If you can transport the box away instead of me...
[That was the only way out that he could think of. It had taken him the last month and a half to figure it out. That was all.]

[Sonic spoke into the vent, getting as close as he could to the black hedgehog. Did he hear that right? Chaos Control? Really? That was it?
How was that even possible? Sonic almost dismissed the idea as completely ridiculous, and yet he trusted Shadow to know more about Chaos Control itself. Sonic had only ever used it twice. How could he separate the two of them with just one surge of Chaos energy?]
Is that really gonna work? I don't... [Understand. Want to hurt you. Want you to suffer. But he trailed off before he could finish his sentence.]
Reply
Do it... I'm as good as dead anyway...
[His intent wasn't to scare Sonic, but skirting around the edges wasn't going to solve anything. With Sonic here, things could at least get done, even if it wouldn't last.]

Okay, fine! I'll try it, okay?! I can do this!
[Chaos Control. Third time had to be the charm. Third time's the charm. From his cosmic pocket, from cosmic oblivion, Sonic pulled out a Chaos Emerald. Green. How fitting. The blood that seeped through some of this white gloves had begun to stain the empyreal crystal in his hands.
He showed it to Shadow.]
You're gonna be fine, okay, or you better be and this better work!
[Sonic exhaled. He had to try, he had to try something, and this was the best solution that they could come up with. The blue hedgehog concentrated, remembering how he had done this the first two times before, focusing on separating the black hedgehog and the box to free Shadow from his prison.]
... Chaos.... CONTROL!
Reply
Once the brightness of the Emerald enveloped everything, he soon found himself on the dirt ground, the box nowhere in sight. He didn't smell all that good, he was almost a skeleton, and he could barely move, flopping onto his side like a lifeless doll. ]
Reply
And yet it had.
The Emerald disappeared into nothingness along with the light.
And the blue hedgehog turned pale at the sight of his friend.]
Shadow!
[How could... how could anyone do this to him, what had Shadow done to deserve this, he hadn't done anything wrong, why did he have to suffer over and over, why did it have to be like this, why was it... so damn unfair.
Immediately Sonic was by Shadow's side, getting his arms underneath his friend and holding him up as best he could to at least have the black hedgehog more upright. Even in Shadow's state he could more than likely feel how much Sonic had been trembling.]
H-hey, wake up... I did it... I told you I would, right...?
