Working home - the plusses

Jun 24, 2016 02:53

So begins yet another attempt to resume regular Livejournal entries. My heart isn't into it today, but I have to start somewhere, so I'll begin with the plusses of telecommuting...

It's hard to believe that I've been working exclusively from home for nearly five months. It hasn't been any harder to interact with my colleagues, since the people that I work with the most are based in DC and abroad. Half of my job involves coordinating communications across teams based in various locations or alternating between working at the office and from home, so this has been a cakewalk. I use my Skype status indicate when I'm working and when I'm on break and for how long, so I'm probably easier to reach than people in their own office. With Skype you can also share computer screens, so it's practically as good as standing at their elbow.

Working from home shields me from a lot of aggravation. No wardrobe agony. No commute. No long and loud personal phone conversations, open-mouthed screaming sneezes, tone-deaf singing or shitty attitude from the cube next door. No high heels going CLOPCLOPCLOPCLOPCLOPCLOPCLOPCLOP across the bare wooden floor. No interruptions from visitors or having to deal with facilities issues. I can keep my room as hot/cold/dark/light as I like and crank my system as loud as I want without a headset. I can hoop and wand whenever I feel like it, even in the middle of meetings. I can check personal messages and make personal calls whenever I need to, which saves work time, since I don't have waste time finding some privacy. I spend less money because rarely eat out for lunch. I eat less and I'm less likely to eat junk. I don't stress eat as much.

There are indeed cons, but I'll save that for next time.....
.

telecommuting, work
