A gloomy day with positive notes

Oct 23, 2013 09:21

Normally I look forward to gloomy overcast days, since normally they're so rare down here. Not so much in the past few months. Eerie. Today's sky would not be out of place in Buffalo or Seattle, sans rain.

Yesterday was tough going. Hot flashes are destroying my sleep. I'm slowly catching up, but I'm still running on fumes. I was on a nice buzz from a rare end-of-the-day beer (a Magic Hat Séance left over from our party a few weeks ago), ready to slide into blissful slumber... Then my mother-in-law called to let us know that her eye appointment at Duke had run ridiculously late and that she would need to stay here overnight. I drove Gary downtown so that he could drive her and her car to the house, since her eyes wouldn't be OK to drive until morning. The fridge has been empty for several days, since we've all been busy, so Gary took her out to dinner, while Gavin and I went to BJ's.

At that point I was so tired that I just about wanted to weep, but it was a chance to hang out with Gavin with just over two months left before he heads to Port Orange/Daytona for three years of chiropractic school. As expected, I felt ten times better afterward. We bonded, chatting about comedy, financial aid, girlfriends and cooking while buying a terrifying amount of food. It's mostly fresh meat and veggies, so an epic amount of cooking will have to happen very soon. Gavin and Rohan will do most of the cooking to help out with room and board. I would love to just cook for several days, especially with this weather, but it'll be several days before I can spare the time and focus from work. The Plan is to have enough for leftovers and lunches, possibly even freezing some for later, not a strong possibility with Gavin in the house. We returned in time to have a decent visit with Gary's Mom before everyone turned in for the night.

Not a lot of sleep last night. I usually wake up after a few hours with at least an hour of tossing and turning between each block of sleep. Today I feel just perceptibly better, but it's enough to make a difference. The ops team were pleased with materials that I submitted yesterday for the Afghanistan audit. A number of items were missing, but I won't be the one sent to search offsite storage. They were stored before my time, so they're not on the log. Someone will have to drive to the facility and locate the box before Friday. I feel for them, but it's out of my hair.

Next on the list is mid-month reports, rejournals (corrections to dozens mis-coded entries), drafting 52 emails for billing/reporting review and another 35 emails so send the bills to the clients, closeout invoices for two projects with multiple issues, materials for another audit, several client queries, collections, dealing with whatever else has piled onto my inbox since last night ... then back to the India audit. And planning the office Halloween party. I seem to be permanently in charge of Halloween.
