[Les is looking very business-like. He's wearing his best shirt and vest, impeccably clean and groomed. His hands are neatly folded together on his desk in front of him -- a gleaming gold wedding ring quite visible on one hand -- standing out more because the buttons on the shirt and vest are silver, and it clashes.]

this is how les makes friends, got some angles to play, the man in charge, les is being diplomatic, scary when he's nice

Have you ever considered that there might be a reason that as a whole, inmates don't work together? Some of us cannot be trusted. Like Adler, for example.

You don't trust a certain Inmate? Don't work with them. It's as simple as that.

It's not the simple. There is no reason why any inmate should trust another inmate. At the end of the day, we're all here for a reason and it isn't flattering.

By your logic, no one is trustworthy. Yet businesses are put together, governments, all manner of organizations.

Ew. And yet, I'm not really surprised.

Pretty much, yeah.

Don't suppose there's a way to get my washroom back.

Not really...but the wardens are allowed to have their own, if you want to use mine.

Gladly. But let me keep things simple so I don't have to repeat myself later.

I have to provide someone else with protection?

Isn't that what these warden creatures are here for?

They can't have that much power over us if we make ourselves more self-sufficient as a group, now can they?

What kind of system do you have in mind?

One of accountability. If you agree to take part, then if you are unaffected by the flood and it's not dangerous enough to put you in the line of fire, you make agreements with another Inmate of your choosing to keep an eye on them if they're affected. No strings attached. No special affiliations. Just simple, mutual protection from incrimination, or eventual pain and embarrassment.

[He briefly makes a face because... that actually sounds like a good idea, but he follows it up with a dismissive laugh anyway.]

A buddy system?

Sometimes the simplest solution is the most effective.

Your idea is a good one in theory, but, then, so is populism. People have tried this, and it has not worked; you've undoubtedly heard this before, but perhaps not considered the implications. Three people have responded, I will estimate that you will get perhaps one or two more, out of the 64 inmates currently available to comment. You sir, are being dismissed at hand.

Now. How do we fix this?

It's better than doing nothing, and I already have plans to better mix myself with the others. Social gatherings, simple introduction. But the most effective movement in my favor will be when I can successfully talk the Wardens into giving us something.

Because I? Not easy to beat when I'm doing my thing. You can take that to the bank.

And I will win something from them. I just haven't yet decided what to move toward.

The wardens and the floods are two separate problems, in my mind, though the apathy of the former to attempt to control the effects of the latter certainly doesn't help it.

But yes. I'm sure it won't be hard to talk them into concessions for yourself. This does not begin to form any sort of hierarchy or organization among inmates, nor does it solve the overall problems.

Not concessions for myself. Concessions for the Inmate population as a whole.

Wardens and Floods are separate problems. However, it's a simple motion to make things easier for us while they continue to scramble for some semblance of control. The more self-sufficient we become the less they can hold over the group.
