OOC: But I'll always want you here by my side...

daemonmuses: Ten songs on your personal soundtrack.

I've already got the Doctor's playlist posted here, but hey, let me ramble about ten of my favorites! Lyrics are linked (and there just may be box.net links on the playlist proper...).

You Know My Name - Chris Cornell
When the storm arrives, would you be seen with me/By the merciless eyes I've deceived/I've seen angels fall from blinding heights/But you yourself are nothing so divine/Just next in line
This is my absolute favorite song for the Tenth Doctor (although in Riftverse, he shares it with nowherexboy). It is not, entirely, who he is, but it's the man he thinks he is, dangerous and ruthless and it just echoes so many of my favorite lines from him, the main ones being "No second chances - I'm that sort of a man" and "I'm the Doctor, and you're in the biggest library in the universe; look me up."

Handlebars - Flobots
Movers, shakers and producers/Me and my friends understand the future/I see the strings that control the systems/I can do anything with no assistance
I know we've all seen the vid (and if you haven't, go watch it now), so maybe it seems a little obvious, but you know what? I don't care. This is so the Tenth Doctor. This is the man who sometimes goes a little too far, who needs someone to stop him, it's got the perfect mix of that exuberant, childish side and the really fucking scary, ancient and forever side. It is My Doctor. All over.

Let's Talk About Spaceships - Say Hi to Your Mom
And what's that saying again/They're only words and words can't kill me/Well, I can't even spell them/And the cadence to what she says is well
"You talk all the time but you never say anything." The Doctor has this habit of just... saying words. Like if he talks fast enough about technology and space and aliens and all that, he won't ever have to face the important things, the things that scare him. I can't even point out my favorite scenes where he does this, because it would just go on forever, but... I love that part of him, and the chorus is so perfectly him - it's what he's always saying, just in more words and never directly. "Let's talk about spaceships or anything except you and me, okay?"

The Ballad of Barry Allen - Jim's Big Ego
Now I have to try to be patient and wait for calamity to strike/Because when things change in an instant/It's almost fast enough for me
This song kind of breaks my heart, but it's perfect for him. At least once a season, he has a conversation with someone about how he's so old, and he's tired of watching everyone he loves wither and die around him... because he knows when it comes down to it, at the end of everything, he's going to end up alone (and the last three seasons haven't done anything to prove him wrong...).

I Know You Know - The Friendly Indians
In between the lines there's a lot of obscurity/I'm not inclined to resign to maturity/If it's alright, then you're all wrong
Something of the Doctor's exuberant childishness, something (again) of his inability to actually talk about things that matter, something of his habit of not letting people know when he breaks ("Is 'alright' some special Time Lord code for 'really not alright at all'?")... plus, it's just so damn BOUNCY. It suits him.

Love Don't Roam - Neil Hannon
Well I've roamed about this Earth/With just a suitcase in my hand/And I've met some bog-eyed Joes/I've met the blessed, I've met the damned
Is it painfully obvious? Well, yes. (Hey, at least I didn't include "Song for Ten", though it is on his actual playlist.) That doesn't mean it's not perfect. Every single time I listen to this song, it breaks my heart a little, and really makes me wish that just once he'd get a companion who would stay with him for more than a season. Because Ten needs people. He needs them so badly.

Secretariat - Jeffrey Foucault
'Cause I'm the blue-eyed son of a hurricane/I'll twirl you around so sweetly/But be careful, you know Atlanta never looked the same/After she burned to the ground
"'Cause you know the Doctor, he's wonderful, he's brilliant, but he's like fire - stand too close and people get burned." The Doctor ruins people's lives, especially the people he cares about most. He doesn't mean to, but... his life, he can't really help it. It started out as just a Martha song (it was the "heel like Achilles" verse that did it for me), but by now, it's a song for all of his companions.

Time Is a Lion - Joe Henry
Death in disgrace can seduce anyone/That needs to believe there's judgment at hand/Or God may be kind and see you as a son/But time is a lion and you are a lamb
The Doctor who believes himself as the final authority, the Doctor who sits in judgment, the Doctor who is ancient and forever. Last of the Time Lords, seeinng the whole of time and space, and he still sort of believes that as a Time Lord he has the right to that power ("I'm a Time Lord - I have that right," and the Doctor's response isn't "no you don't", but "But even then..."). I can't help it, I love that Doctor. It's a dangerous way for him to think, and he really does need someone to stop him, but oh, it makes me happy.

All Will Be Well - The Gabe Dixon Band
The winter's cold/But the snow still lightly settles on the trees/And a mess is still a moment I can seize until I know/That all will be well
For all that the universe keeps kicking him around and leaving him broken (and alone and sad on the TARDIS at the end of EVERY DAMN SEASON), for all that he's been prone more and more to cynicism and despair lately, the Doctor's still got this streak of optimism a mile wide, the belief that somehow, he can make things work out, save the day, and EVERYBODY WILL LIVE, DAMN IT. ...And then canon goes and kicks him in the face anyway, but it's STILL THERE. (Wow, I got capslocky here, didn't I? It sneaks up on you...)

Come With Me - Raindancer
Now I'm leaving it all behind/I don't know what it is I expect to find/But I'll always want you here by my side/Come with me
I am throwing in one more happy song, because sometimes the Tenth Doctor just requires adorable bouncy music. And this. Is. Perfect. It's his first adventure with every companion he's had. It's optimism and adventure and running off to anywhere in the universe with your best friend. It's my Doctor all over, when the universe actually allows him to be happy. I just kind of want to make a vid to this song with just a bunch of shots of him being adorable with his companions and running off with them hand-in-hand, because that is exactly what this song is.
