when people say that if you grew up in the state of new york, but not new york city then you are NOT allowed to call yourself a new yorker. I think if you say new yorker, nyc is implied, but really...come on now, i love it too but NYC is such a small fraction of the state of ny. Like, wtf. If you weren't born here, you're not a Noo Yawkeh; I've lived here over 25 years and I still don't consider myself a New Yorker.

I grew up upstate.

When asked where I grew up, I generally say "New York." When/if questioned further I add "Upstate - Rochester."

...I don't have problems with people calling themselves new yorkers, though. If you want to identify yourself as someone who is notoriously douche-y, go right ahead!

Seriously. People pull the same crap with Chicago. Who the fuck cares? I work there, I school/schooled there, my friends live down there. I feel totally comfortable saying I am "from Chicago," and then when people ask whereabouts I say "about twenty miles out."

Do you have a nifty phrase like we do? Chicagoland area?
