Okay, well, Amanda asked what I was talking about when I mentioned my little stint with Seventeen Magazine coming up. So I thought I'd explain for anyone else who was curious (or isn't on Facebook.)

1. June 8th 2007 <-- This is an entry written when I was told that I was a finalist to participate in Seventeen Magazine's new "Freshman Fifteen", a project in which fifteen girls are chosen from thousands of applicants from all across the country to be featured in their magazine and share with the world their college experience.

2. June 18th 2007 <-- This is the entry in which I was told that I had gotten the position!

3. June 28th 2007 <-- This is the entry in which I realized that this was a paid internship, as opposed to an unpaid one.

If you want some more info (or just a quicker, more updated summary):

Seventeen Magazine has chosen 15 girls from across the country, who are going to be freshmen in college as of Fall 2007, to share with them and the world their college experience. We 15 girls come from all different backgrounds and walks of life, but we're all going to fairly prestigious schools for our field (Wesleyan College, UC Berkely, Notre Dame, NYU, Crane, etc.) One of the girls is an immigrant from Japan, one is from the deep deep south, and yet another one of the girls is going to be attending school in Honolulu, Hawaii! (My mother and I joked that it'll be funny to see the NY girls posting pictures of ourselves in the snow while the Pacific Ocean girls are still posting pictures of themselves surfing.)

Basically, what we do is work from home. Seventeen provides us with an special Myspace profile that we use to share our experiences and communicate with the young girls who read the magazine. With this MySpace, we are required to:

  • Spend at least 30 minutes a day online.
  • Write a short blog entry every single day.
  • Accept girls who "friend" us.
  • Upload at least one new picture of ourselves/our college/our friends, every week.
  • Take short videos of ourselves/our colleges/our friends each week, and take slightly longer videos of ourselves/our college/our friends each month. (These longer videos that are then sent to Seventeen's headquarters to be edited by their professional team of techies to look more exciting and presentable.)
  • Give some ideas, thoughts, and suggestions to the magazine about what we would like to see in the magazine.

... And, that's about it!

In return, you get to be in the magazine, you get online publicity, you get to meet a ton of people, and --- oh yeah.--- you get $1,000. ^_^

As I mentioned in the Facebook notes, I never would have pegged myself for someone who would do this, but I'm excited about it now. The truth is: I love writing, I love diaries, I love pictures, I love videos, I love getting paid just to be on the internet (!), and I *love* attention. ... It's vaguely sick, but it's oh-so true. I love talking about myself and being on stage and raising eyebrows and being looked at and making people FEEL something (whether it's hate or loathing or humor or whatever!)

Plus, as an aspiring musician: No press is bad press. ^_^

(I'm excited just to have my name out there!)

Lah! Anyway. Expect to be hearing more about this in the coming months.

♥,

~ Liz
