Garth Nix.. hmmm it's been a while since I read them and as I remember they too were quite simplistic in their writings like the Otori Trilogy, very light read. Hmmm I can give you a quick rundown...
The entire series is set in early-ish 20th century England which borders a mystical land known as the Old Kingdom. A wall runs between them, and at the wall the magic from the Old Kingdom disrupts any technology - with most magic fading as you reach further into England.
Hmmm.. the story goes that there are two types of magicl Charter Magick and Free Magick (the first being orderly and good, the later being chaotic and evil). Some great evil is raising the dead and so a bunch of them try and find the Abhorsen (a good necromancer who can send the dead back to "Death" - described as a shallow river of infinite width that tugs you towards a gate. Each gate leads to a deeper level of death and the current gets stronger, until you reach.. I think the seventh or ninth gate then there's no return no matter how strong you are?). Call it morbid, but necromancy is so interesting.. hehehe in this they have 7 bells, all of which do something different in terms of sending people to Death, giving the dead a voice etc.. interesting and creepy.
Way crappy review, but hehe ^^;
As for Life of Pi.. to a fellow IS student? No I wouldn't be willing. But for a friend, of course ^_~
