I just had a very interesting experience.  Somebody claimed that the Grateful Dead only have three good songs.  That's quite amusing.  This same person claimed to have listentened to 400 Grateful Dead songs, too, which is quite possible, because they have close to 500, if not more.  But in those 400+ songs, to claim only three are good?  There's something wrong there.  And I can accept somebody's opinion, if they don't like a band.  I really can.  But they song's they named are the most overplayed Grateful Dead songs ever.  Truckin', Casey Jones, and Touch of Grey.

The Grateful Dead were never "popular" in the sense that they made the charts.  They survived for 30 years, touring every year of those 30 except for one.  Touch of Grey was their only song that made it into the top 10.  To have claimed to listen to 400 Grateful Dead songs, and claim only those three are good?  There's a problem.  I can name songs that the Dead have done that are pretty bad, and I will do so now.

Bad Songs:

1.  Morning Dew (cover)
2.  Born Cross-Eyed
3.  Rosemary
4.  Dark Star
5.  Monkey and the Engineer
6.  Lost Sailor
7.  Jack-A-Roe
8.  High Times
9.  Doin' That Rag
10.  Dark Hollow
11.  Blues for Allah

I'm sure there are more, but I don't have them on my computer to compare to.  Now, if I were to name good Grateful Dead songs, I would need to do a cut, because the list would just never end, honestly.  And this is only my opinion, and not many people will share that, and I've accepted this.  This is coming from a Grateful Dead fan, and though I may be close minded on the topic, to say that this band is bad, or is only good if you're high is a joke, because I don't do drugs, and yet I love them.  The music just flows, and there really isn't a reason that I can come up with that somebody may dislike them.  Over their course of 30 years, they have changed members countless times.  Their keyboardists either passed away, or moved on.  It's never stopped them from playing, and they continued to amaze their fans.

Their studio albums may not be the best, but they were never known as a studio band.  They were a live band.  They jammed on songs, and just played the night away.  They continue to do this now as just The Dead, and without Jerry Garcia leading them.  It took them 8 years after his death to come to terms with this fact, but they are still loved, even today.  They may be old, but if you see them live, they still have the energy that they had 20 years ago at their peak.  If given the chance, I suggest that everybody should give them the chance they deserve, live, and go to a concert if they are coming close.  You may not be interested in the music, but the concert itself is just a mind boggling experience.
