As most of you know, I'm a huge TV buff. I'm finding myself at a loss since most of my shows have gone on summer hiatus, and have decided it's time to turn to my, "I've Been Meaning To Watch..." list. Well I watched the first episode of Series 5 and got everything just fine without having seen a single episode beforehand :D Obviously prior knowledge enables you to get more little jokes and meaning of throwaway lines, but they're not essential to the plot. The Doctor remains the same man, he just looks different and has slight personality changes, so knowing his past is important as far as knowing the character fully goes, but you don't need to in order to understand the show. It helps that he gets a brand new companion in the first episode of this series too so there's no background in terms of that either :D It's all new and shiny.

All you need to know is that the fifth series starts immediately after the Doctor regenerated, so there's chaos all around and he's still adjusting to the body.

eta: Also, I'd decided to watch the previous episodes because I really liked the show and wanted to get to know the Doctor better. Not all episodes are great though and some people on my flist were spiffy enough to give me recs, which you can find here and here :D

Ah, okay. I get it! That sounds good.

Okay, so Series 5 sounds like the consensus for starting.

Thanks for linking to the recs! I'll definitely look into those. :D
