“Some people deserve to be alone.” It was a simple statement. Her heart wasn’t in it.

“Yes. Charles Manson deserves to be alone, George W. Bush deserves to be alone. Just because genetics dealt you a shitty hand doesn’t mean you deserve to be alone for the rest of your life.” He always contradicted her. Almost always. If she said Chinese, he said pizza, if she said the shower, he said the kitchen table. It was always a power struggle, though usually a playful one.

She stared at him. “How did you know?”

“You had a Band-Aid on your arm the day after Amber died, and now you’re ‘breaking up’ with me, but not actually breaking up with me because we weren’t actually together.” He rolled his eyes a little. Rightfully so, it sounded absurd.

It had only been a month since then. It had taken her twenty-eight years to get the nerve to test herself, and three weeks to get the nerve to sever this weird relationship. Three weeks and he had her halfway decently figured out.

When did Kutner get so perceptive?

“When you hide things, it makes it a lot more obvious,” he said, seemingly answering her unasked question. “But that’s not the point.”

“No. It isn’t. The point is that I can’t keep doing this knowing I could die…tomorrow, next year, ten years from now.”

“So you’re dooming yourself to a life of celibacy and loneliness?”

That made it sound so negative. “I’m just not letting you set yourself up to get hurt.”

“I can handle death, if you hadn’t noticed,” he said bluntly. “It’s not like it’s something you can prevent. Why not just continue like you were before you knew? When it comes, it’ll come.”

Thirteen was not really accepting of being unbroken-up-with. Or whatever the fuck was happening.

“So you’re un-dumping me?” she asked him skeptically. She had dumped him. Or not. They hadn’t been together. Well they had been sort of together. …How could he un-dump her if she had dumped him in the first place?

He sat down on his couch. “I’ve made my case, if you want to go back to your apartment and spend the night crying and masturbating, go right ahead. But if you’re going to listen to me for once, I have a bunch of lame horror movies and popcorn.” Nevertheless, he smiled at her.

She let out a long sigh, and sat down beside him.
