Well, this is turning into an interesting week...
I'm filling if for one of our agents who is works out of Denso's facility in Maryville. For those who don't know what they are, Denso is a manufacturer of car parts. In Maryville, they make altinators, starters and various other electrical engine components. This is how my week has progressed thus far...
Monday morning...I come in through the employee's entrance and am greeted to a metal detector and my brief case being searched to make sure I'm not bringing any electronics or anything not allowed into the building. All of this in the name to protecting themselves from industrial espionage. Cell phones are prohibited within the plant, and they have gone to the extent of having signal suppressors installed around the plant so that if someone were to get their phone in, it wouldn't work. I am amazed that these even exist.
Okay, so I get to the office just to have someone come over the loud speaker and start leading the entire company in 15 minutes of calestinics. I kid you not, everyone is expected to stand in front of their desk and participate, I guess though it's not a bad idea, it does seem to make sitting at a desk all day a bit easier. Finally I get logged into the computer after going through about 6 warnings that network traffic is monitored. I think 'okay big deal' and start about my work. Then I start trying to respond to emails and start getting bounces back for 'Security Breaches' and I can still send the email but it will be sent to corporate security for review and possible repercussions will ensue. So I decide to use my World Travel email, I then get an email from Security advising me that I'm in violation of Denso's usage policy by accessing an outside email. So it boils down to I can't send an email outside the company that contains links or certain words...one of them being 'itinerary'. Um what email do I send that doesn't include that word???? I'm a travel agent for gods sake! So I'm quickly becoming more adept at 'creative writing'.
So far Tuesday and Wednesday have been pretty much the same, but I've also learned that the Japanese are every bit as bad as US companies, which had disappointed me greatly. According to Denso's travel policy, Japanese nationals are permitted to travel in business class for business related travel, however, US nationals of equivilant status are not, unless they are traveling with someone who is authorized, and then only if the flight is over 5 hours....I couldn't believe it.
Oh well, I only have 2 more days of this to go through, I think I will manage, but I do have to say I've become disappointed in the Japanese once I've done work for them.
