I did something foolish on the weekend. I only wanted to check if the Babylon 5 episodes my husband got for me are of good quality. I ended up watching nine episodes over the weekend (8 episodes from season 1 plus "Dust to Dust" from season 3 which I still remembered for its intensity).
So yep, I've fallen in love with this series. As if I haven't enough viewing material as it is, e.g. the last 30 episodes of Angel or the seasons 3 - 5 of Alias. Well, at least Babylon 5 has only five seasons and not seven. So it could be worse. :-)
When Babylon 5 first aired, I was already busy viewing Deep Space Nine so I kind off missed out on the experience. It wasn't that I didn't like the series, but I ended up missing episodes and was confused whenever I zapped back in. ('What happened to commander Sinclair? Who the heck is that new commander? And what's up with Delenn's new hair style? Who's the guy with the beard? Where's Talia?') So I gave up...
Well, after my little viewing marathon on the weekend, I have to say I'm impressed by the quality of the early episodes. All the characters have something that makes them interesting, e.g. Commander Sinclair is very debonair on first sight, but clearly has been affected by the war. Ivanova has a very cool and professional facade, but has quite a tragic childhood. I also like her sense of compassion.
My favorites are, of course, Londo and G'Kar who are very much alike this early on in the series: Both passionate and connoisseurs of beauty, both very patriotic. They are still often used as comic relief (G'Kar even more than Londo), but already their characters are interesting. It definitely helps that the actors who portray them are *good*. And that Londo and G'Kar have such amazing chemistry. (Why the heck are there so few stories about them? Where are the tons of fanfiction? Why's there hardly any slash for them?)
Love the little hints to future events. (I'm not completely spoiled, but I do know some of the major developments.) So Londo stating that he looks good in purple gave me a little shiver.
Checked episode names and character names - and it looks as if the creator of Babylon 5 loves Tolkien. There are lots of names reminiscent of LotR. Also Vir and his story arc remind me of Sam Gamgee.
