And the fact that his pre-algebra teacher turned into a Fury, an ancient Greek monster. After escaping from her (and gaining Anaklusmos), Percy and his mother spent a weekend in a cabin on the beach where she met Poseidon - until they were attacked by a minotaur. Grover showed up, revealed himself to be a satyr, and tried to help Percy and his mother escape. His mother was about to be strangled by the monster, but turned into a shower of golden light. Injured, Percy and Grover managed to reach Camp Half-Blood, where demigods like Percy are trained and taught how to survive. “Mr. Brunner” showed up there, as well, revealing himself to be Chiron, the famous centaur. The camp is run by “Mr. D”, a.k.a. Dionysus (who's in banishment from Olympus and wine for a year for chasing after a wood nymph who was “off limits”). Among the campers he met there was Luke, a son of Hermes. At camp, he was claimed by Poseidon (basically it was revealed that he was Poseidon's son).
Percy was offered a quest to retrieve Zeus' stolen lightning bolt (mostly because he's been blamed for it), and traveled with Grover and Annabeth (a daughter of Athena) to the Underworld, in Los Angeles. All the while Percy had dreams of a deep pit, and an evil voice. Through a series of incidents that they barely managed to escape from (up to and including an encounter with Ares, god of war), they reached the Underworld, where Hades revealed that his Helm of Darkness was missing and blames Percy for the theft. He also reveals that Sally Jackson is not dead, and he would be willing to trade his Helm for her.
Obviously, something was very wrong there. The trio managed to escape the Underworld just in time, and found that Luke was the one who stole the lightning bolt, but was caught by Ares, who made a deal with the demigod. Percy faced off with Ares, and managed to escape, and bring the bolt back to Mount Olympus (which is currently located on the top of the Empire State Building). He found out that there was a prophecy that said that the next half-blood child of one of the “Big Three” (Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades) to reach sixteen would either save Olympus or destroy it.
Back at camp, Percy was attacked by Luke, who revealed that he was working for the titan lord, Kronos. Luke escaped from camp, and Percy finished the summer at camp before going home to try a new school. His mother used Medusa's head (which Percy gave to her) to turn Smelly Gabe to stone.
Fast forward to the end of seventh grade, where Percy made a new friend, Tyson. He also had been having nightmares about Grover. Of course, Percy couldn't end the year normally, and monsters attacked his school. Annabeth showed up and helped Percy and Tyson escape, and it was revealed that Tyson was a cyclops. They head to camp, where Thalia's tree (a daughter of Zeus who was turned into a pinecone tree to prevent her from dying, and protected the magical border of camp) had been poisoned. He also found out that Grover is missing, after heading off at the end of the previous summer to search for the lost god Pan, as most satyrs did (though none had any success).
Percy, Annabeth, and Tyson (who was claimed as a son of Poseidon, making him Percy's half-brother) headed out to the Sea of Monsters (a.k.a. the Bermuda Triangle) to find the Golden Fleece to heal the tree, and hopefully find Grover as well. After another series of adventures, involving such stops as a visit from Hermes, a stopover on Luke's ship (where it was revealed that he was using a golden sarcophagus to try to help Kronos come back to life and amass an army), and the witch Circe's spa (where Percy was turned - temporarily - into a guinea pig), the trio arrived on the island of the Cyclops, where they rescued Grover and found the Golden Fleece. They are captured by Luke, but managed to be rescued by Chiron's centaur relatives.
Back at camp, the Fleece was put on Thalia's tree. It healed the tree... and also restored Thalia to her human form.
