Dominic | 4/6 myfarewells February 1 2010, 19:52:46 UTC
[ Personality ] :
Overall, Dominic has many sides, and which one he shows depends on the circumstances. None of them are "hidden," so to speak--they're all a part of who he is. One could say that he's a bit ordinary because of that, as he has no default reaction to everything. He's also fairly open with how he's feeling without putting up masks, as he's typically honest with himself and with others. That's not to say he won't lie or act, as he will if he has to. However, he won't try to fool himself about his emotions, limits, and whatnot.

The part of his personality that comes through strongest when he's alone is his calm and pensive side. There aren't many opportunities to have hobbies while aboard ships and whatnot, so Dominic spends a lot of his time thinking, especially about the state of his world or his circumstances. On that note, he's not content with staying in the dark. If there's something he needs to know, he won't wait around for others to tell him when they may never will. If he has to, he'll go out and search for it on his own. While Dominic may seem like a "leashed dog," it becomes apparent throughout the series that he's more loyal to his ideals than he is to his superiors. Even at the beginning, he's not above disobeying others, such as when he takes off without permission. On the other hand, as said before, he knows where his limits are. He's not going to fly off when he knows it won't accomplish anything. It's moments like these when his more intelligent nature shines through, especially since--

--Dominic tends to be naive at times, particularly about the world and relationships. After all, his relationship with Anemone is hardly a normal one, and given his circumstances, he likely doesn't have much experience when it comes to romance. Also, he's a very idealistic person, which is what puts him at odds with Dewey, whom he used to respect. He hates the idea of innocents dying, even if he knows that it's necessary. Additionally, he often seems surprised at how bad the war has gotten, such as when he's driving Anemone to the party and comments on how there were refugees even there.

That, combined with his sweet side, make him a very kind person. This is is extremely clear in his interactions with Anemone, whom he's in love with. While he can be strict with her if need be, he's usually rather gentle with her, despite her abusive and dismissive attitude towards him. She treats him like dirt--he treats her like she's the most important thing in the world. For that matter, to him, she is. He'd do almost anything (stopping short of crossing his morals) for her, no matter how suicidal it might seem for him. Half the reason he betrays the military is for her sake, even though he knows that it might worsen his image in her eyes. One thing to note, though, is that all this could apply to anything he cares for--Anemone is just the best example, seeing as how he lacks something called a social life. He wouldn't consider for a moment choosing himself over what's important to him, making him as selfless as he is kind.

Speaking of which, one might be wondering throughout the series why Dominic even puts up with her--whatever he's being paid to look after her, it can't be worth the abuse. Aside from the fact that, as said, he loves her, there's a simple reason why: he needs her. Not only can he empathize with her loneliness, but she takes away his own. After his parents' deaths, Dominic essentially became alone in the world. Anemone is the only person he can connect with and the only person whom he actually matters to in some way, until late in the series. This works as a double-edged sword, though: because Anemone's already filled the void, Dominic doesn't care about making new friends. Thus, he never actually seems bothered by his current circumstances, although his issues still exist. This much is obvious when Renton's grandfather shows him kindness--probably the first genuine kindness that Dominic's been shown in a long time. There's a reason it's the only time he cries in the entire series.

[ Personality (cont'd)] :
Also, the thing with not caring about making friends? It generally means that he doesn't care if he doesn't get along with others. Dominic is an impatient person, so he can come across as rude. Around other soldiers, he has no qualms about expressing his anger, which often puts him at odds with them. And believe me, you don't want to make things worse when he's not in a good mood, because he's perfectly willing to be a jerkass then. Again, though, he's not really a rude person as a whole. He can be respectful and polite when he needs to be, like around Dewey, whom he definitely sees/saw as a superior. His arguments with other soldiers typically come from a conflict in authority and decisions, such is the case with him and Jurgens--Jurgens is the captain, but Dominic is a special agent, and each has different priorities until near the end of the series. Fortunately, he does know when to sacrifice his pride.

A good way to see his polite side is to stick him around people who aren't part of the military. That's not to say he won't get angry at them--he's still as impatient as ever. However, he seems to act much nicer around them, likely because he's not trying to be authoritative anymore. If anything, he's actually somewhat awkward. Also, just try complimenting him on his appearance or devotion. Dominic may be good-looking and devoted, but he's as modest as heck about both.

Something else that he certainly possesses is determination. Dominic isn't the kind of person who ever gives up, no matter how bad things get. He's not capable as some of the other characters, but he'll do everything he can to protect what's important to him. He's prone to angst, but he doesn't let it get out of hand or interfere with what needs to be done. He can bounce back fairly quickly if he has bigger priorities.

In general, Dominic's also a serious person. While he has a sense of humour and might smile/smirk even in bad situations, he's not someone who's all that used to having fun. What he is used to is work. Giving out orders is like breathing to him, as is taking them. He's very dedicated to his duties, whether they be the ones he's been assigned to or the ones he's chosen for himself.

[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :
As he's from the military, Dominic's a good shot with a gun, and he possess basic combat abilities. He's also capable of piloting/driving a variety of vehicles, from motorbikes to cars to high-speed aircrafts to, in the manga, LFOs. It's probable that he's reasonably talented with computers as well. Judging from the manga, he has a high tolerance for pain as well.

He has no sense of direction and he can't read maps well, unfortunately. Also, when it comes to protecting what matters, he tends to be impulsive. He knows he has limits, but if he thinks that he can do something, at least, expect him to throw caution to the wind. It's not so much that he doesn't know what the consequences could be as it is that he just doesn't care, which is bound to get him into trouble sometime. Thirdly, Dominic just fails at being intimidating or commanding, really. Even with a gun.
[ Other Important Facts ] : ... He's short? I dunno.

[ Sample ] :
What--? Where am I? This isn't...

[A pause]

... Am I dreaming? If this is a dream, though, then where...? The ocean?

[But this doesn't feel like a dream. And if it's not, then there's something--or rather, someone--more important right now. He stands up and looks around.]

Anemone!

[He calls out her a name a few times as he scans the area, but obviously, there's no reply. For a while, he just stares at his surroundings with a confused look. The last thing he remembers is falling from the sky, seeing theEND and the Nirvash, and then--

Well, thinking about it now, he probably did fall into the ocean, if that was what that body of water was. Still, he's fairly certain that Earth never had cities underwater. None of this makes sense, and Dominic really does not like things when they don't make sense.

He begins walking down the street because, well, standing around isn't going to get him anywhere. It doesn't take him long to find some people, at which his eyes widen and he runs towards them.]

Excuse me? I don't suppose you could tell me where I am...? Also, have you seen a girl around this [He marks the height with his hand] tall with pink hair and purple eyes? It's extremely important that I find her, or else...!

[Or else she might die or get herself injured somehow, and there's absolutely no way Dominic is letting either happen. He promised her, damn it!]

Please! I really need to know!

[The current circumstances aren't doing much for his nerves, in case you couldn't tell.]
[ Questions? Comments? Concerns? ] : The side effect of dying (being paler and weaker than usual)--is it permanent? Or is it just for a period of time or something?

Also, just to make sure: the characters grow weaker each day unless they touch the Lamufao, right?
