[ History ] : Shawn's story begins when he was but a wee, young lad. Before his parents were divorced, his father, Henry Spencer, a then police sergeant of the Santa Barbara Police Department (now retired), would vigorously train him to study his surroundings and train his observation skills. His father basically wanted Shawn to follow in his footsteps to become a cop, but much to his chagrin, that didn't happen despite scoring a perfect score on the detective exam at age 15. Shawn was always a troublemaker and this carried over to his the present day.
He was 15 when his parents divorced, and this event caused strained relationships with his father. He always believed that it was his father's fault it happened, and that he had left his mother and him alone. It takes some time, but they eventually start to mend their relationship, and Shawn now seeks Henry for advice either on life or his various cases. This "mending" of their relationship is aided by his mother, who came to do psych evaluations on the department. She explains to Shawn that it wasn't his father's fault, but her's, and this opens Shawn's eyes a bit.
Before Shawn created his "psychic" detective agency, after graduating from high school, he worked in fifty-seven other jobs that spanned both North and South America. When he returned to Santa Barbara, he'd call in tips to the SBPD hotline, and this eventually puts him under suspicion. And this is where and when Shawn Spencer psychic detective was born. He claimed he had used psychic abilities to "acquire" his tips, when in actuality he was able to figure out or saw various clues that would help solve the case. However, the ruse worked, as he was able to prove himself by telling unknown facts about certain members of the SBPD. He later recruited his childhood best friend, Burton Guster (more commonly known as Gus) to be his partner in crime. They set up the Psych psychic detective agency and Shawn becomes an official psychic consultant for the SBPD. They team up with lead detectives Carlton Lassiter and Juliet O'Hara. While Lassie doesn't really believe in his psychic abilities and will do anything to prove him the fraud that he really is, Juliet accepts his "abilities" and the four form an undoubtedly good team. Even though Lassiter doubts Shawn all the time, they are all on good terms, with Juliet obviously being closer to them.
Now it's time to talk about Gus. As mentioned before, they have been BFFs since childhood and have attended the same schools up until high school. It's actually due to Shawn that Gus went into the pharmaceuticals. He had filled out a form during a job fair back in high school for him. In fact, Shawn tends to invade Gus' life a lot, for better or for worse. This includes taking Gus' pharmaceutical rep exam without his knowledge. But no matter what, he's always looking out for Gus and cares a lot for him. They're almost like brothers, you could say. Usually he winds up dragging Gus along for cases and other shenanigans, and whenever on a case and introducing themselves, he will always never call Gus by his real name. It will always be some kind of random name that has some vague similarity/relation to Gus and usually makes no sense whatsoever. Shawn hardly ever does anything without Gus if he can help it.
[ History (cont'd) ] : Throughout the series, Shawn becomes involved with a number of cases. One of the most important cases is his "face-off" with Mr. Yang, an exiled serial killer who directly challenges Shawn to catch him. This is most stressful case to date, as he had to figure out clues within a time limit. It becomes personal when Mr. Yang takes his mother, who had been in town for a short time. He manages to catch Mr. Yang, only to discover that he is really a she.
It's this same episode where he finally forms a romantic relationship with Abigail Lytar. Long time high school crush and the one he always thought of as the one who got away, they had been speaking to each other again after their high school reunion. Prior to reuniting with Abigail, Shawn pretty much flirted with every girl he came across. It gets a little complicated as Shawn and Juliet have had some attraction to each other (well he liked flirting with her at any rate, and Juliet had offered to take him out to dinner that same night Shawn was going on a date with Abigail.
Awkward.
Shawn and Abigail have a more-or-less steady relationship, even if his "job" sometimes got in the way of their dates. At the point he's being taken from, she tells him she's going to Uganda for six months or longer, and their relationship becomes a bit more uncertain.
Despite the danger that usually happens on the cases, Shawn still continues to pretend to be a psychic and continues to insert himself into every possible case that seems the most interesting.
[ Personality ] : Despite his age, Shawn lives very much like a childish, rambunctious, reckless adolescent. He’s always out trying to find ways to entertain himself and it usually comes at the expense of others. Jokes and pranks could be considered one of his fortes. Many times he’ll be off to the side goofing off, sometimes even playing with some random object. This includes during serious discussions. When in the Chief’s office, he’ll sometimes play with the strange glass fish that’s sitting on her desk.
Shawn usually takes everything in a lighthearted manner, and tries to make a joke out of everything or say witty comments. One of his usual characteristic traits is to make references to various old 80’s movies (as well as contemporary ones), as well as other usually obscure media. He’ll even mix them or make some kind of hybrid reference. Even during his “psychic visions”, all seriousness is usually lost at one point or another due to his antics, sometimes unintentionally. For instance, he might get a little sidetracked by trying to pronounce a word (and fail). He also tends to do overdramatic antics to mesh with the whole “psychic” image he’s throwing. Usually it just makes him look like he’s going crazy, but it does throw in that element of surprise. He may also make up words that are close enough and just flies with it. Whenever he’s corrected in pronouncing something, he usually just brushes it off saying he’s heard it “both ways” - meaning he’s heard it pronounced the way he did it as well as the correct way.
However, a good sense of wit and intelligent creativity comes along with all of this. As well as lying through the skin of his teeth. Shawn will come up with ideas and names right off the cuff, usually with little to no thought. He can also be a bit rash and just plunge in head first with little planning. However, over time as well as Gus’ influence, he’s a bit more cautious and more likely to think a little bit beforehand. That still didn’t really stop him from literally walking into an art thief’s room without really any preparation other than to just find him and be like “AHA!” or sneaking onto a boat and hiding under the deck.
Shawn is a good thinker, and thinks fast. Because of his hypersensitive observational skills, he can pick up things most people can’t, and that includes reading people. He can use this to his advantage to help push his own crazy ideas. Also, despite his adolescent tendencies, he’s pretty smart, particularly with puzzles and strategizing. And chess.
He’s also a bit of a flirt. He will always put on a charming, gentleman act in front of a prospective lady, even altering his voice to have an air of formality. Since he’s being taken out during a time where he is currently in a relationship, he’s less likely to flirt/chase after girls. He is actually trying to work out a serious relationship, though his lifestyle and work sometimes gets in the way.
Another thing is that he is a bit egotistical. By a bit we mean a lot. He does think highly of himself and his abilities, and will brag about them in some sort of cheesy way. But he doesn’t necessarily go out and about shouting how great he is or anything like that. And he will also gladly give credit where it is due. Usually. Maybe not all the time, especially when it comes to Gus, but usually. Okay sometimes. But he recognizes when someone is better than him and will utilize another person’s skill if he can find a use for it.
[ Personality (cont'd) ] : While he may not always be serious, that doesn’t mean he’s ignorant or arrogant about things. He knows when things are bad or troubling, and genuinely does care about those he’s close to. He might be a bit more flippant in regards to his clients and the deceased, though. But he is especially caring about Gus, who is his best friend and partner. For example, when Gus gets stuck in a bank robbery, Shawn does everything it takes to help him out and is obviously stressed and even felt guilty about letting him go in there. Some of his actions might seem annoying or irresponsible, but there’s usually some reason behind them. He will also admit when he is wrong and then promptly try to make it so he’s right again or at least figure it out so he can be right.
He can also be a bit of a coward/scaredy cat. Despite his claim as a “psychic”, he really doesn’t believe in ghosts or the paranormal, as shown in several episodes that involve such themes (like the Halloween episodes, Gus’ boss’ house being ‘haunted’, the exorcist episode). But when things get a little too creepy or unexpected, like oh say, a mummy being found in a driver’s seat or suddenly finding a dead body, he can scream like a girl and run away (with Gus usually right next to him). There are times when he does keep his cool, and this is usually when he’s more or less prepared for it. By this time he’s kind of used to seeing dead bodies so that it doesn’t phase him as much anymore. He doesn’t necessarily try to put up a strong front, but he will for the bravado. Still, he would prefer the professionals to take on t he real risky business.
Despite that, he still has a great sense of adventure and will tend to stick his nose into anything that seems interesting. This includes trying to figure out what cases are available and following leads and tailing suspects. Protocol? What protocol? This usually lands him into hot water, but when it’s to find the truth, for whatever reason, he’ll do what it takes to figure it out.
As the whole “psychic detective” gig is his first real career that he finds that he’s both good at and enjoy, he takes it a lot more seriously despite the whole joke façade. He named his office “Psych”, a name which Gus pointed out pretty much said that they were faking it. Shawn insists it is just a creative form of “psychic”, but also notes that this way they’re not lying.
All in all, Shawn prefers to living a life of ‘fun’ and excitement, which he ultimately gets through his “career” as a “psychic” detective.
[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] : While Shawn claims to have supernatural psychic abilities, this is in fact a lie. Since childhood, his father trained him to be super observant about his surroundings in hopes Shawn would follows his footsteps and become a cop. That didn’t really happen. But because of the constant training, Shawn is able to notice every detail about a room or place or, well, anything, that normal people would. He can also use these clues to gather enough information to deduce behavioral patterns, personality, or the person’s lifestyle. This also means he is very aware of and knowledgeable about human behavior and can read people.
With just a simple glance or look, Shawn can already notice and remember everything like a photo. But with a bit more concentration, he can hone in on certain aspects and details. He also has a photographic memory and can recall every detail about whatever he saw. He can also remember conversations, including the exact phrases and how the person behaved. It’s as if his brain is like a 24/7 video recorder and he can playback everything. It does take some work and a little digging, but he can recall pretty much almost everything. That doesn’t mean he necessarily knows everything from the start. Usually he has to look back at it a few times and look at it in different angles to notice some significant details.
Being able to put together the details and come to a deduction (though not necessarily the correct one) is another talent he has. He can usually do this very quickly and on the fly. As also mentioned in his personality section, he is pretty good at puzzles and tactical strategies, as shown when he is playing chess against his father and predicting/figuring out the movements of his targets.
Shawn has some mild acting abilities. Mild. He can take on a variety of personas and pretend to be others, but usually he does this for any “undercover” work. Normally he takes the better character.
His biggest weakness would be him landing himself in hot water due to consistently sticking his nose into everything and doing things on his own, dragging Gus with him. As his father repeatedly tells him, Shawn doesn't always think about the consequences of his actions, and will sometimes realize too late the negative effects. He also has a penchant for getting into trouble, coming up with grand schemes that normally don't follow the rules.
[ Other Important Facts ] : As stated before, he makes obscure 80's references, and will somehow have a pineapple reference/cameo somewhere.

[ Sample ] : I must be dreaming. Or hallucinating. Preferably the former. It must have been that horrible, horrible upside down pineapple cake I had last night. I thought for sure that new Easy Bake oven would do better than the last one. But that doesn't explain why I'm soaking wet, and I'm sure I didn't fall asleep in the shower.
But really, what is this place? It's like Water World, only with less post-apocalyptic overtones and more Little Mermaid and Atlantis. And now I'm getting hungry for sushi. Thanks. Thanks a lot whoever dragged me here! You could have at least left me a towel or something!
[and there will be strange orb floating around him] And what is this...thing that keeps buzzing around my face? [staaaare and trying for a poke, but it flies off to the other side of his head] ...Huh, it's like a shiny, orb of light. Or a floating, white puff ball. Weird.
[oh hey, people! will be venturing] Hey could you tell me where I am? Maybe an aquarium or a really awesome water park that Sea World should check out because this just blows them out of the water. Also, a towel would be nice, preferably one of soft, downy cotton with a sweet, but not strong, fragrance. A change of clothes would be nice, too. [but they're not answering and instead are just. smiling. at him. ...] Okay, that is creepy--[and hey he got what he asked for. the towel even had a pineapple on it]--and that was fast.
[will be sidling away from them right about now, taking a really good look at his surroundings: strange buildings that was obviously made of coral, water all around him, no lack of fish. yet he was breathing and moving as if he were on land, and that was really confusing him. so as much as he doesn't really want to, he tries and asks one of the people. when he's told there's a bubble barrier, he makes a face]
Great, so I'm in some kind of watery world snow globe thing? Really? It couldn't have been some kind of tropical paradise beach with palm trees and beach babes? [pause] Bubbles are also bit unorthodox, but it does add a nice touch, I'll give you that. I'd like to see the bubble machine for that. Would be great for parties.
[sighs and looks at the floating orb] Toto, looks like we're not in Santa Barbara anymore. [yes, he will be calling it Toto from now on.]
But hey, if this really is some kind of water world thing, maybe they have some dolphins I could ride. I may have been thwarted twice, but not this time!
Now if only Gus were here. How else am I supposed to get pictures?
[ Questions? Comments? Concerns? ] : Why am I doing this. WHY AM I DOING THIS. DAMN YOU KAT. DAMN YOU. You just had to app Lassie first didn't you. And if only I was sure Shawn played Zelda, I totally could have made him do a Navi reference /sob.
OH ALSO. DO THEY SELL PINEAPPLE AND SNOW GLOBES. :D
