It seems like only two weeks ago I embarrassed you so thoroughly in front of your friends, and only one week ago we were pointedly pretending we did not know each other as you sung brilliantly on stage and I watched for codes, so as to not be caught, and only three days ago that I held your steady hand as my shaky hand slid that object currently resting in my pocket onto a dainty finger, and only yesterday you wrote me a two-hundred page novel explaining why we could never be together. And now, my dearest, my darling, the woman of my dreams and sometimes my nightmares, when I dream of exactly this happening, we will never speak again.
Never again will I leave snippets of letters in the fountain in hope that you will find them, instead of R., or M., or, heaven forbid, G. Never again will I sip at a root beer float and wistfully gaze across the room, hoping you might join me, only because I had two straws instead of the normal one. Never again will I huddle in the bottom of a leaking rowboat with a flashlight and a tattered book and a typewriter, sadly out of ink ribbons, and wonder if you'll delight in the sighting of such a rare, code-friendly bird. Never again will I send a gift to your house, without any letters or notes inside, and hope you enjoy it, and spend nights alone awake afraid you did not.
Of course, I may do all of these things in the days to come, and so much more, but, alas, where before there was a hope you would be there to receive my advances, now, you are not.
As I stand here, among the wreckage, my shoes and face suitably soaked by the water leaking from the ruined wood and my tear ducts respectively, I find it impossible to think that just twenty-four hours prior you were laughing merrily with the person you loved, with your three very interesting and disarmingly clever children at your side, and I was hiding in a sewer, hoping to hear just a note of laughter, miles and miles away. The smoke was visible from quite a long distance. I think, had I been able, I would have been able to see it from that terrible French restaurant you avoided, or from the Financial District, or even from Lousy Lane. It may have been visible even from M's laboratory, or from J's window.
Even if it had not been, I can promise you this, dearest Beatrice: no matter where I could have been, I would have felt that heat on my face as if I were standing just a foot from the fire.
It's getting harder and harder to type in the dark, especially with a typewriter on the wet ground, and a current lack of ink ribbons. If I could have thought to bring more, I would have written much more to you, Beatrice. I could have written all the things I always meant to say, and written all the things I never meant to say but sometimes would anyways, and written all the things I wish you had said to me. I could have written a great sonnet, coded or uncoded, detailing every moment of watching the fire that claimed the beautiful library I'm now standing on, or the hallway with the marble tiles, or all of those unopened gifts I sent, or the sugar bowl you kept out of force of habit in the kitchen.
